Most of them went through tough times in childhood with the Depression and the War, so they know deprivation, and don't want to experience it again when they can't do anything about it but drool.
Posted by Robert Evans at June 16, 2012 6:43 PMWell, I get that. It doesn't make them any less stupid, does it?
Posted by Velociman at June 16, 2012 6:52 PMI bet you never witnessed the Left's street theater. You never saw them trot out some scrawny old grandma, weeping, in tears from hearing that someone in the room of Democratic candidates was considering alterations to Social Security.
You never once conceived of the need to expose that street theater with theatrics of your own. It was too much bother to round up other boomers who knew they were getting screwed and challenging the Leftists to a game of tag.
Yeah. Me too.
Posted by Pascal at June 16, 2012 7:09 PMI'm 52, and there is no way in hell that SocSec will be there for my age group. Floating around at the back of my mind is the Winchester-Olin retirement plan, and I don't think I'm alone in this.
It might be that promises that SocSec reform will only affect future, and not current, retirees are greeted with skepticism. How much faith do you put in promises from the government?
The retirement age ought to be adjusted upwards, anyway. It was originally set at just a couple of years past the average age of death, back in the 1930's.
Posted by Mike James at June 16, 2012 9:06 PMGood news: The Baby Boomers will play an increasingly important role in American society.
Bad news: As a food source.
Posted by zonker at June 17, 2012 3:19 AMI have some slightly used almonds, okra, and t-bone if anyone is looking to me as a food source. Don't dally. It is losing it's bouquet as I type.

Most of these people voted for Franklin Roosevelt, and that was before they were senile.

Posted by Cappy at June 17, 2012 5:25 PMI turned 62 just before the turning of the year and so far have received 5 SS payments which are just about enough to pay the note on the Ram and put gas in it twice.
You, of course, have hit the nail on the head. We oldsters are going to continue to receive everything we've been promised. Of course, it will secure a less and less valuable part of what it takes to survive these, and the upcoming, dayz.
We've done it to ourselves, not only my age group and older, but those coming along behind. We all wanted and voted for that "free bubble up and rainbow stew".
The piper always has to be paid in the end. Even then, as in that hoary old tale, I suspect the young will be led off into a forest of wars and rumors, there to spend their vital fluids fertilizing foreign soil, the better to ensure future crops for those with power.
I say bullshit to getting what you were promised - take out what you put in and call it quits. It is the honorable thing to do. Me, I know I'm getting jack shit - I consider that tithe as paying off my mom's bill for her.
The only logical answer I've ever heard was from Ann that said, in short,we keep paying, knowing we get nothing, the All About Me generation receives a meager portion while putting in the full load, and the generation unborn pays nothing and gets nothing. That is the only way. And it is a shit sandwich from every way you look at it.
Posted by LauraB at June 18, 2012 2:30 PMI think some of the ancients I know object to reform because reform makes real that it isn't 'their' money that they paid in all these years, justly owed back to them. They cling to that myth so they can keep cashing the checks with self-respect. The more the myth it is touched and challenged, the more the myth crumbles. I've known many people who "would never take welfare" but are glad to cash the transfer payments of social security.
This self-deception is more dangerous than simple senility or stupidity.
For as long as I can remember people, and that includes family, have been saying "Lets go to the USA and get something for nothing" I resisted, for most probably the wrong reasons, but Boy am I glad I did. Obama has dropped the value of my pay, as I get paid in dollars and I want a strong dollar. But besides that I am helping myself into my dotage with my money and mine alone, no state schools or hospitals, only the best that money can provide. I do pay VAT and other simple taxes but I do not pay any tax on my income. Vote this fucker out and get back to some Republican "States" otherwise you are or is Europe.
Posted by keeskennis at June 23, 2012 3:18 PMThere was a bit of confusion at the store this morning. When I was ready to pay for my groceries, the cashier said, "Strip down, facing me."
Making a mental note to complain to my congressman about Homeland Security running amok, I did just as she had instructed.
When the hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to my credit card.
I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future.
They need to make their instructions to us seniors a little clearer!
