I have always deplored the BCS system for its arbitrary and arcane anointing of national champions in college football. However, since Obama has deigned to weigh into the fray, and "fix" the college championships, I now find myself decrying the loss of Tradition we have enjoyed in the past under the glorious BCS system.
My hypocrisy is tempered only by the prejudicial treatment the current scalawags have always given the SEC, so it's really a net-net for me insofar as my soul is concerned.
I find myself trying to invoke "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" for this scenario but Obama is a drag on the co-efficient of any formula and the result is less than desirable in this instance.
The BCS so-called "system" sucks, but not as much as Obama.
Posted by: Joan of Argghh! at January 31, 2010 8:36 PMIt is only football. As an alumnus of UT, and I don't mean Texas or Toledo, my saying that might make it unsafe for me to visit Knoxville again. However one does need to maintain perspective.
There's something bigger about this - an inclination of the POTUS to insert himself and the federal government into EVERYTHING that hits the news.
A nice link with a great quote from Sir Winston Churchill:

Posted by: Guaman at February 1, 2010 5:33 AMThe lunacy of legislating the BCS is merely a symptom of our political system's collapse. How absurd.
To get serious, the BCS should disappear, and we should revert to the old bowl system with disputed champions. (That's UT's only chance.) Disputed champions gives us something to do until next season, and is itself great fun.
While we're at it, we should get rid of instant replay for officials. Instant replay seldom corrects officials' errors, often introduces new errors, and breaks up the pacing of the game. However, we should keep instant replay for the fans so that we have something to whine about when our team is screwed. (Again, UT's only hope.)
I'd get rid of commercial time outs, too, but is deferred to the Second Coming.
Posted by: bob sykes at February 1, 2010 7:49 AMI'm reminded of the Dirty Harry line, "A man's got to know his limitations." Clearly, our manchild President does not, and this is just another example of his self-evident foolishness. Keep on plugging national healthcare, shithead.
As for the BCS, it has nationalized what was a regional game a decade ago. That's a good thing. Why else would I care what was going on in the Big East? Losing the traditional matchups? Not this year. The Buckeyes won the Rose Bowl, and that's all that really matters.

Posted by: Cappy at February 1, 2010 10:57 PMDoes the Berlin Philharmonic perform skiffle? No, they choose from the preeminent works of composition.
Prejudicial treatment? Perhaps, but only in the most worthy sense.
