Like Tricky Dick, But Hold the Dick

As I came out for Sarah Palin for Veep in October 2007, it's no secret I find her an attractive candidate for high office. And despite the fact my prognostication skills have been suspect since I bragged in seventh grade that Johnny Unitas was going to kick Joe Willie's ass in Super Bowl III, I believe I can unequivocally state that you've heard the last of Sarah Palin until about 2014.

Her resignation as governor bears a striking resemblance to Richard Nixon's exasperated "You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore!" after his unsuccessful bid for governor of California in 1962. Like Dick, she knows the media is stacked against her, and if there is any inkling that she will be running against the polished turd currently occupying 1600, the attacks will never stop. It's akin to the sinking of the Indianapolis, only she's the only sailor in the water as the circle of sharks grows tighter and tighter.

She certainly can't run in 2012 after resigning her governorship, as that would 1) exacerbate her lack of experience, and 2) show a presumption of being a quitter when the going gets tough. She will raise her disabled infant and tend to her bastard grandchild for a few years, taxing enough work for anyone. She may never return to public life.

Howsomever, if the makos have gravitated to newer, fresher targets, and the Democratic field looks weak for 2016, she'll make her move then. Having spent five or six years doing unglamorous but resume-enhancing work at think tanks, conferences, and party enclaves. She could possibly come back stronger, less ignorant of key issues, more mature, slightly less sexy (lending her some gravitas), and ready to kick some ass.

But 2012? Not a chance. No matter how abysmally Obie is doing in the polls, he'll win a second term, so it is ridiculous for Palin to expend what little political capital she has left tilting at that particular windmill. And that race, in traditional Republican fashion, is Mitt Romney's to lose. I'm wishing Mitt well in advance, but he won't be seeing a dime of my money. I don't bet on losers. Except for Johnny Unitas. And that was just lunch money.

And one other thing: although this may seem like an unintelligent move right now, Palin has proved herself smarter that the bright guys on many occasions. Certainly smarter than Joe Hymie the Robot Biden, whose current undisclosed but secure location is apparently under an Amtrak station in Dover.

I liked this post except for the last sentence.

Have a good 4th, Kim.

Velociman, I'm not sure what color the sky is on your planet, but on mine, Gov Palin had no choice but to resign.

Why? Simple. As long as she's Governor, EVERY.LAST.EFFIN.THING. she did that might be considered campaigning would bring another fake ethics complaint. Even if they ALL get dismissed (and she's 15 for 15 so far), she has to pay for defending them herself, and it was well on its' way to bankrupting her and her family. Not to mention that she has to win every time; the legal terrorists only have to win once. And there's also the fact that if she runs for higher office, the DemStream Media is sure to trot out variations on "Where there's smoke, there's fire!"

What I hope is that we will start doing the exact same routine on every Democrat in any state with an ethics statute. However, we're too fucking gentlemanly for our own good.

I keep getting reminded that for all the high and noble principles of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, they were well aware of the need for Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty to drag Loyalists into alleys and pour boiling tar on them after beating them to a pulp.

Posted by: SDN at July 4, 2009 9:27 AM

I'm sorry. I thought I mentioned a stacked media, relentless attacks, and circling sharks as the reason she resigned.

Posted by: Velociman at July 4, 2009 9:36 AM

If only we could convert many of those attacking to lamp post decorations all would be well.

Posted by: vanderleun at July 4, 2009 10:39 AM

You know, I don't remember Republicans bitching about legal bills when Bill Clinton racked up $11 in them as president. I loathe Clinton, but a little consistency would be nice.

As for Nixon, he had served four years in the House, two in the Senate, and eight as vice president. He didn't resign any of those offices because people were "being mean" to him. In fact, the attacks furthered his career.

Also, he wasn't a raging idiot who couldn't talk about anything other than drilling more oil to tax the producers thereof and the goddamn liberal media.

Nixon fought. Palin quit. And she might have been smart for doing so. Who in their right mind wants to be the sacrificial lamb in the middle of the GOP's ritual suicide?

The party is going to take an even deeper ass-kicking in Congress next year, with the Democrats holding maybe 64 seats, and Republicans are busy tearfully admitting to adultery every 25 seconds and holding those stupid fucking tea parties.

Who in their right mind would want to run on that?

Posted by: skippystalin at July 4, 2009 11:32 AM

I don't think it's as bad as all that. She can easily claim the "I'm looking out for you" meme in as much as she was tearing through taxpayer funds as well as her own to defend herself from bullshit lawsuits. This is a perfect example fo the need for a 'loser pays' system.

People 'quit' and then there are people who 'quit'.

Something in me says she'll be a ferocious fundraising force for conservatives (although, not necessarily Republicans). I'm not so sure that a top-of-the-ticket run in 2012 was really in the cards anyway.

Someone will throw their weight behind her and she'll throw her weight behind someone else. She'll be a rainmaker if she so chooses and, while not in office herself, can be far more assertive/aggressive both in her own defense and in launching a counter-attack. And, it would be one hell of a thing to see the media and the entire leftard party attacking civilian Palin and child(ren). Sure, they did it to Joe, but his 15 minutes are pretty much over.

I learned in church when I was little that if you're not be tempted or tormented, then the Devil already has you by the balls. (Okay. Maybe that's not exactly how they put it.) A hell of a lot of people felt threatened by Palin and I think that's the biggest tribute to her staying power.

For every ten run-of-the-mill libtards out there laughing their asses off, there's at least one considerate Democrat saying "Oh shit! What is she up to now?"

I see ... an opportunity. Maybe she can champion government-provided legal care for all and deflect from the health care shitstorm. Universal legal care, since it is so damned expensive. Get some poor person to come forward and tell a sob story about how he lost everything because he couldn't afford a good lawyer...

Posted by: PeggyU at July 4, 2009 1:34 PM

... and if she really wants to hit a nerve, showcase a divorced couple (neither well off)who lost everything but lined a divorce lawyer's pockets.

I'm not even saying it necessarily works like that, but people don't care about facts when they are caught up in class warfare.

Posted by: PeggyU at July 4, 2009 1:38 PM

You betcha.

Then again, she may have just returned to private life. Decided that politics was for prostitutes and that she didn't need to be involved in that.

Posted by: PawPaw at July 4, 2009 2:20 PM

I tend to favor the high legal bills and resulting distractions from the job of Governor in AK.

I would suggest that either Repubs get on board the latest Alinsky tactics or perish while trying to hold their heads high against the onslaught. Politics and media have changed forever, and there is only one sure way to play, and that is to be unconventional.

I think that is why so many people think she has made a big mistake. They are using yesterday's political rules to make their judgements. It's a new era, so get with the counter-program.

Posted by: sammy small at July 4, 2009 2:48 PM

"You know, I don't remember Republicans bitching about legal bills when Bill Clinton racked up $11 in them as president. I loathe Clinton, but a little consistency would be nice."

Doesn't consistency require that you compare apples to apples? Clinton was guilty of sexual harassment (and possibly rape), and it took a SCOTUS ruling to make it OK to sue the sitting president. Furthermore, the lawsuit was NOT intended as an Alinskyite, full-metal-jacket assault that was designed to destroy Clinton; it was brought by a woman who wanted her day in court.

Me, I was agin letting someone sue a sitting president, specifically because of the distraction aspect. But Palin was being nickeled and dimed to death by people who had no legitimate reason to bring suit against her; they only wanted to drive her from office.

Bastages succeeded. Isn't that nice? Time for some hard-core Loser Pays reform, say I.

I think the powers to be told her to get lost.

Happy 4th of July.

POLISHED TURD.....so simple....so eloquent....so true...

Posted by: Tbird at July 4, 2009 6:44 PM

I'm not convinced Obama will win a second term. Remember what happened to Jimmy Carter with the same philosophy/

Rick

Posted by: recondo32 at July 4, 2009 7:34 PM

This nation won't be able to withstand another term of that goddamn mooncricket.

I wouldn't bet a nickle against Sarah, because she will have my vote if she decides to run.
As you said, remember that whole Unitas/Namath deal.
It was a hell of a game.

Posted by: Dick at July 4, 2009 10:39 PM

I lol'ed at the polished turd thingie too.

Posted by: Erica at July 5, 2009 8:52 AM

Two words. Jack Ryan.

Obama is used to suing people and having daddy Soros knock out any scary object in his way. Lawsuits, threats, 'truth squads.' Palin has successfully withstood 15 bogus ethics charges. It's costing her and the Alaskans a lot of money.

She's already knocked Michael Jackson off the news. Hopefully the media won't box her into a negative meme. Their total obsession since Day #1, frankly, doesn't show much confidence in O'Bumbles.

She had, and still has, my vote.

Posted by: Vermont Neighbor at July 5, 2009 12:25 PM

And right now, I have a dream. It has to do with equality.

I hope she comes out even stronger against Obama and his 'czars' and embezzlement and political raping of the Constitution.

Even if the resignation turns out to be for personal reasons, she'll have the freedom to speak out, as a citizen, and pound on this gold-plated hustler.

Posted by: Vermont Neighbor at July 5, 2009 12:33 PM

Holy smokes, the seminar callers were all over the local talk radio stations yesterday, calling her a "quitter", "unqualified", or worse.

Just listened to that annoying Andrea Mitchell on NBC yapping about Gov Palin's "disjointed" resignation announcement.

That the libtards feel compelled to continue the smears and name calling tells me they're still scared sh*tless of Ms. Palin, and the threat she represents in 2012, 2014, or 2016.

One minor nit, great one:

"...more mature, slightly less sexy..."

Some of us out here in the wildnerness do not necessarily see those two phrases as mutually exclusive. Just sayin'...

Posted by: Grumpy Old Ham at July 5, 2009 6:55 PM

Awwww, come ON guys! You don't think this woman has a plan, and a big one? She already accomplished what she set out to accomplish for the State of Alaska, and it only took her 2 1/2 years, not four.

Palin is a smart cookie, and everyone wants a bite out of the smart cookie.
And all she's going to give them are crackers. Salty ones.

Sarah: Some of us former pageant winners GET you.
The rest of you clods can go back to rah rah-ing for losers like Romney or Newt. Old politics. Old men. Snore.

I can't wait to see what Palin does next. You betcha!
Oh, and for a truly intelligent rant about Palin, you have GOT to go to this site!
Kicks ASS.

Either there is a deep family secret about to come out, or Palin decided that Alaska was too far away from the power center of Washington DC.

Posted by: Jack Straw at July 5, 2009 11:18 PM

Velocidude methinks you are being much to despondent, you may be right, but I think that Palin is going to be breaking it off in the ass of all her frothing critics. She can now sue for defamation, stopping all these baseless accusations. Also, if she has any future political ambitions she can now jet around and campaign for any Republican, she still has star power, I don't see that diminished. She will fill seats and get people to write checks, that will get her a big payback from anyone she helps.

Posted by: Cocklebur at July 6, 2009 8:54 AM

Cocklebur, so true: "She will fill seats and get people to write checks, that will get her a big payback from anyone she helps."

And somehow, successful fund-raising always brings with it impressive rules for forgiveness.

I'm just upset that more opinion writers aren't including the nonsense lawsuits, endless filings and the financial burden on her constituents. Of course, we know... it's the Chicago way.

Maybe a quitter to some. But to many she'll be free to take on the state-run media, and the banana republic currently soiling the halls of the Whitehouse... not to mention her good name.

Posted by: Vermont Neighbor at July 6, 2009 12:49 PM

Och, she just needs to pack up and move to TX - good hunting, and Ted's already here.

Ready for the secession when you are, darlin'.

Posted by: LauraB at July 6, 2009 2:00 PM

"polished turd" and "mooncricket"

That's way too hysterical!! Thanks!

I agree! Alaska was getting ripped off because of the scumbags attacking her. And she's honorable enough to quit rather than let that happen. Makes me love her more. And TRUST her.

I don't give a shit what the filthy politico-class has to say, or their simpering, slobbering toadies in the media. And I don't think the Beauteous Sarah does either.

She does what she thinks is right.

And in politics, that makes her a fucking miracle.
