Yes, I'm in an introspective mood. And yes, you Gen X'ers need to shut the fuck up, sit down, and listen to your goddam Grampy, who slept in a Holiday Inn Express last night, and is therefore not only empowered but has a back out of whack.
What's your greatest rock and roll song, chirren? Something from Green Day? Fuck off. Cobain? Get out of my face.
You head bangers: if you even mention Stairway to Heaven I'll cut your fucking heart out and nibble on it. Don't go there. That was great screw music, is all. Dontcha memba? Go back to bed. And try not to wet it this time.
Yes, we boomers are narcissistic assholes. But look at the bright side: We're dropping like flies. We're not fat like you X'ers, but time takes its toll anyhoo. But until your atherosclerosis drops your chunky little ass like a bluebottle fly on a piece of rotted labradoodle meat, you are consigned to suffer unto us boomers' horrid whims. It sucks, I know. Tough titty.
And I will caveat this: if I'd ever had sex with a blonde midget while Sympathy for the Devil was playing, well, hell's bells, that would be my favorite song. But that didn't happen. Dammit.
Oh. The Song? You hunny bunnys are so clueless:
P.S. That banjo song from Deliverance might actually be the most powerful song of my generation. For all the wrong reasons.
****Runs screaming into traffic**** Yet ANOTHER Beatles song... ARG! Don't talk to me about being a boomer - I know I am, but I'm soooo tired of the Beatles I could scream.
Give me about 10 years and I'll be very happy to try listening to them again.
Posted by: Teresa at June 15, 2007 10:03 PMOne simply cannot have too much Beatles.
Posted by: Jim - PRS at June 16, 2007 4:17 AMGotta agree with you on this one -- vote or no vote. OMG -- I still remember hearing it on the radio for the first time -- we had just never heard anything like it ever before. Incredible. Thanks for posting the vid.
Posted by: Marianne at June 16, 2007 5:13 AMThe minute his image came up on the screen I fucking KNEW what song you'd picked. And couldn't agree more.
First song I ever really slow-danced - with a girl who was a grade ahead of me. That was a big deal when you were only in grade 7. Fell totally in love. With both the song and the girl.
Just noticed her listed on my high school's alumni website as I was surfing through it this morning. Kismet. Guess I should drop her an email to say thanks for the memories.

Posted by: Light & Dark at June 16, 2007 2:41 PMnope. great song, but too slow and sappy to represent the best of rock and roll. sorries, old man. polarrhoid or not, Starting Over is a much better choice. the lyrics are just as sweet, plus it's got wah-wahs, and you have to have those to be the best.
I ain't buyin' that one Sally. He had a one legged wife dude. How can he possibly sing the "Greatest Rock and Roll song"... It's a sweet tune for sure, but if you dissin' Stairway, and, the obligatory Redneck Freebird, you need to drop the pipe man...
Just out of good natured fun, I'll post my "Greatest Rock and Roll song, for "The Day", and let you bash back, assuming you can raise your arms with that bad back. It might help to raise 'em if you let go of your dick.
I don't know what the wah wah's have to do with shit but, rock changes, and I'm not up to date, so I don't hang an "all timer" up there. There's simply too damned many of 'em. Wah wah's shoe?...
Shit, next thing I know somebody will be nominatin' Frampton... Do you feel like I do.
Posted by: RedNeck at June 16, 2007 6:11 PMI always thought "Kashmir" was great screw music. Nice steady rhythm, heated atmosphere, Robert Plant feigning multiple Big O's. "Stairway" is just insufferable to listen to these days.
BTW, best Beatles song, ever. First album I ever got stoned to. It profoundly affected me, much like "Deliverance" has you.
Posted by: Erica at June 16, 2007 7:20 PMSweet Jeebus on a pogo stick! Are you and Kim du Toit sharing a crack pipe lately or what? First you, then him, now you again!
Shut up and turn on some AC/DC, already!
Posted by: Randy Rager at June 16, 2007 10:52 PMNot a boomer.
Am an X'er, sorry to say.
My other half is a boomer and adores "Hey Jude."
And if I hear it one more time? I'll bang my head against the wall.
As for Cobain? Fuck him. Hope he's rotting in hell. Asshole.
Still hear his music now and then.
Makes me wanna puke.
Posted by: Gina at June 16, 2007 11:04 PMHey, Shoe -- ya want wah-wah, take a listen to Steven Stills' on the original Super Sessions album's cover of 'Season of the Witch.' Definitely one of the best rock albums ever, and still sounds wonderful today.
Posted by: Marianne at June 17, 2007 3:45 AMLynyrd Skynyrd, Sweet Home Alabama. Damn rookies with all the has been washed up Beatles crap.
Posted by: james old guy at June 17, 2007 8:59 AMWhat is it with you geezers and The Beetles? They were the N'Sync of the 60's, nothing more.
Posted by: HTRN at June 17, 2007 9:33 PM"The N'Sync of the Sixties".
I just want to let that sink in for a while.
Plus they had that limey thing going for them. Murikans love a limey...especially if'n they wuz never married to one.
Dylan and Orbison are much more my bag...but then I'm sort of a Gen-X elder.
Posted by: Rosie at June 18, 2007 10:00 AMThe Clash's version of Brand New Cadillac...
Posted by: rankin' rob at June 18, 2007 12:28 PMV-Man - C'mon Dude. Hey Jude? WTF? That ain't rock 'n' roll man. That's a sappy ballad. If you're gonna go for rock 'n' roll there are much better Beatles songs than that to pick: Birthday. Back in the USSR. I go for the harder stuff. Led Zep? I'm so fucking sick of Stairway to Heaven, I change the fucking station when it comes on. For Led Zep it's the Lemon Song or Dazed and Confused.
You want real rock 'n' roll, pick something that Chuck Berry wrote, like Johnny B. Goode or Roll over Beethoven and all of the covers of those songs. Johnny Winter did a great cover of Johnny B. Goode and Mountain did a great cover of Roll Over Beethoven.
Hey Jude is fucking elevator music. It is not rock 'n' roll.
Posted by: Denny at June 18, 2007 1:13 PMMmm, I'm not GenX or Boomer. I'm those few years in between, having missed the Boomer by 1 year. But since by your description, I'm not fat and since my friends are in fact dying, I shall put myself in the Boomer category.
I'd say something by the Stones... like Paint it Black. If I were going to go slow, I'd go Eagles with Hotel California.
My husband, who is 6 years older than I, would say something from Floyd. Or maybe Zepplin. (But not Stairway) Whole Lotta Love. He loved Zepplin.
Posted by: Bou at June 18, 2007 2:37 PMSecond best. First is "American Pie"
Posted by: Alan at June 18, 2007 5:43 PMthe best straight rock song is by Bob Seger and the silver bullet band and is Peggy Sue's getting out tonite"", actually this is probably the best rock band ever
Posted by: David at June 18, 2007 6:53 PM"China Grove" by the Doobies also comes to mind.
Posted by: Jim - PRS at June 19, 2007 3:13 AMLa Grange - ZZ Top
Posted by: Dash at June 19, 2007 9:54 PMWord up by Cameo. Everyone knows that.
Posted by: Michael Vick at June 20, 2007 12:14 AMNah, "Hey Jude" isn't The Greatest Rock Song Ever. It's not even the best Beatles track ever (that's Strwaberry Fields Forever). Best rock'n'roll song? I might go for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" or "Helter Skelter" - McCartney should've rocked more instead of writing ballads.
