Big Black Pussy

In response to my post of several years ago, which generated about 100 comments, in which I stipulated that black panthers do exist in North America, an alert reader sent me this:

Pretty cool.

If it looks that big at that distance it is a large cat. I mean little kid and small woman eating cat. Cool!

The regular cougars (that can put their paws on a window sill 6 feet off the ground and look around your bedroom) I've see are perfectly happy with coming right into your house.

Soylent Green is people!

Ever see black ones, Bane?

Posted by: Velociman at May 10, 2007 10:32 PM

Nope. I believe such prefer southron climes. Thus the intensive melanin.

Perhaps it is from a steady diet of slaves, back in the day.

I do believe in cats... I do believe in cats...

They are pretty much accepted as real here. I had no idea they were thought in the same terms as Lizard Man. I've not seen one, but everyone here seems to have seen a black "panter" at one time or another.

I am sadly youtube challenged so have no comment on what is surely an excellent video.

My mom's got one of the garden variety mountain lions' skins hanging on her wall in the family room. My youngest brother shot it because it was bothering his cattle. Geez, those things are creepy! I don't ever want to meet one in person, though I've seen them from a distance.

Black ones, though. That is interesting. It must be an adaptation to a particular environment. I saw an interesting film on the genetics of housecats in Australia. They were trying to determine where the feral kitties in Australia originated. It turns out they were all descended from a handful of housecats that came from Great Britain. The coat patterns of the cats being studied ranged from tabby, to spotted, to black, to tuxedo, to pure white. However, the cats they descended from were black and white (I think they called them forest cats). Apparently they determined that heredity did not have as large a bearing on coat color as environment did. That would explained why a cloned cat looked different from its parent. Cat coat color is evidently a complicated genetic/environment puzzle.

Hmmm. I was just repeating what I saw on a documentary on Animal Planet. I find online, however, that other people say there is genetic evidence that some of the ancestor cats came from Asia. Oh, well ... the coat color issue is still complex. And mountain lions/panthers/pumas/cougars/whatever you call them are still creepy.
