I hate Vietnam movies. Except for The Deer Hunter. Why? Because they always talk about this enemy, or that objective, or, most likely, my next beer call, being a click away! Or two clicks.
Now, fuck this bullshit. What is a click, anyway? I'm assuming it was Namspeak for a kilometer. But I'd never know, for sure, because I only hear this term when gay Hollywood screenwiters use it. And they use it because some homeless vet they milked for info for a sixpack used it.
Not being a smartass here. I really don't know. I'm sure some of my veteran friends can enlighten me.
Please, sir. May I have another? What the fuck is a click?
It is indeed a kilometer, O feller what Donnie is ascairt of - Army fellers like curly haid what was in the Army back in the 80's an' 90's still used it to figger out how far they still had to walk.
Yeah.
Mostly it's to figger out how far you still got to walk, while you're thinkin' 'bout what all bad shit you're fid'n do once you git to where you're walkin' to.
Damn, Velocifeller - that kind of makes a click a measure of a feller's potential for evildoing, don't it?
Don't pay Bejus no attention. Bejus is partakin' of the grape.
Correction - Bejus is partakin' of the essence of the corn, if it makes any difference.

Posted by: Velociman at March 3, 2006 11:29 PMThe term has been used by GI's at least a decade before the Vietnam era. I head it in the Phillipines in 1961 and started using it. Probable came from those stationed in Europe where of course everything is metric.
Posted by: GUYK at March 4, 2006 7:46 AMWhat they said.
Posted by: Jim - PRS at March 4, 2006 9:27 AMFor the love of god people--it's "Klick" not "Click."
Frigging savages!

Posted by: Shane at March 4, 2006 9:58 AM.. I don't know, man.. I was a Marine.. I just walked the direction they told me to...
Posted by: Eric at March 4, 2006 2:41 PMOf course, the simple knowledge that military maps and the grid system (MGRS) are all printed in kilometers wouldn't have anything to do with it. All ranging is done in meters, all fire commands are metric, everything the Army does is base-10.
Yeah, Klicks are kilometers.
Posted by: PawPaw at March 4, 2006 4:36 PM...and YOU try to say "seven kilometers" over a PRC-29, sotto voce so Charlie won't hear you, in a Georgia accent, and see what you get from the damned New Yorker on the other end of the radio.
And is it kilOMeter, KILLometer, or kiloMEEter? If the fag lieutenant spells it "kilometre" are you supposed to lisp? What happens when Pvt. Martinez says "KEEloMEEtrah"? Inquiring minds want(ed) to know. Some of them were driving Thuds with 500-lb. bombs under the wings and thinking mainly about the O-Club at Ton Son Nhut.
"Click" covers a multitude of sins. We spelled it "klik" when it had to be written down.
Regards,
Ric
V - Yeah... kilometers. I always figured it was because of the maps and charts which were always laid out in kilometers. And that was because the system of measurements was early Euro and based on aeronautical charts that predated the advent of the hummer by about a hundred years. Pre-Viet Namese... and since Viet was French before it was anything else, we just inherited the old system of scientific measurement. But hell... we were British before anything else but we never used Whitworth measure, did we? How much does a "stone" weigh in "pounds" anyhow? It's all arbitrary but we have to use something. Right?
Who ever said it had to make sense? Any form of measurement is gonna be arbitrary, so WTF? A .410 shotgun shell will fit nicely into my Thompson Contender 45/70 cal. pistol. Measurement madness is what it is.

Posted by: Bob Baird at March 5, 2006 11:21 AMI always thought klik referred to the sound my hip started to make after hauling my shit for twenty miles. You haven't lived until you've seen grown men, pissing while walking backwards, then hooking back up and plodding on.
Posted by: Bane at March 5, 2006 4:18 PM... Bob, I think a "stone" is 14lbs... if that helps any...
