LAUNCH DAY

I watched the shuttle blast off from the driveway today with Skeeter, a tradition we haven't been able to enjoy for a couple of years.

Yeah, I know it's just the shuttle, the astrophysical equivalent of the Gator Cab Company, but I reckon it's better than nothing if you're into horsepower. I would much rather we were gifting interstellar civilizations with Ebola and diphtheria, but that's not gonna happen, is it? So I'll have to settle for delivering Oreos and picking up bags of excrement from the space station. The noble pursuit of knowledge, and all.

I used to just watch shuttle launches for the imagery, but nowadays there is a heightened sense of impending disaster. Kind of like watching NASCAR. So there's that.

Can you believe it's been two and a half years? I wonder how many Sarb-Ox compliance meetings that is.

Zonker, sometimes you scare me. I just mentioned to V-Man, via text, that S/O was ruining everything. Damn you, compliance brownshirts! And damn YOU, psychic Zonker!

Won game #40953 yet? ;)

I had the same NASCAR vibe right before liftoff myself. The Shuttle program is basically a federal jobs program for engineers and high tech employees. It's value for space exploration is nil, and it's safety record is inferior to previous programs. At the same time, I like the idea of us putting a big flaming rocket in the sky just to remind the rest of the world that we can. I guess there are occasionally advantages to living in J-ville...

Hey, don't be knockin da space program. I really like Tang.

Go to Drudge and see the pics of the debris falling off the damn thing today.

Ooops.

I think they should stop all work activity and roll in the big black and white TV and let us watch the launch, just like they did in grade school.

I also watched the launch and I even teared up a bit. It's so incredible to watch each and every time.

Hey, Rankin' Rob: I'm also an hour away from Daytona International Speedway. Naner naner fucking boo boo.

NASA today suspended all Discovery flights, and in the next breath said that it had nothing to do with the pieces which fell off the shuttle yesterday during liftoff and that the insulation which fell off "shouldn't" have any impact on the crew's safe return. Now, does anyone believe that?
It's a crying shame. The Japanese and South Koreans build better cars than we do, and I am afraid to think that the North Koreans build better rockets than we do.
Why can't NASA get it right? Have they "diversified" NASA and dumbed it down, like everything else in our government? Sure they have.
