I don't remember a whole hell of a lot about this guy, and it hurts me to throw his name around blogworld, because I'm sure he Googles himself, as we all do, but what a scene.
Mark was a pitcher for the Braves. A closer. A heater. This fucking guy could throw the fucking smoke. You couldn't hit it. You'd fan out, and scratch your cup.
But life went awry for this kid. I can't recall, but either his wife dumped him for another guy, or a piece of pussy. Very bad scene either way. I so felt for him.
After this, he lost it. He couldn't hit the side of a fucking barn. He was throwing at his usual 98 MPH, but it was aimed at someone in the stands. I recall Leo Mazzone kicking dirt, and wondering what the fuck?
I hope that fella turned out alright. In a way. Gratuitous slam at someone, I know, but I actually liked this guy.
UPDATE: Here is a Mark Wohlers Obsession Page. And I thought I needed a life.
I never understood what happened to Wohlers. He reminded me of one of those very good professional golfers who just suddenly can't putt anymore. Mark could still hurl the heat--- he just didn't know where it was going.
What causes that?
Posted by: Acidman at May 17, 2005 10:41 AMHis mind got fucked up. A woman, drugs, a boyfriend or money got his goat. He never came back.
Posted by: Catfish at May 17, 2005 4:05 PMYou google yourself?? THAT'S a cool idea...I honestly hadn't thought to do it...
Does googling yourself make you part of the dork club? ;)
Posted by: Dana at May 17, 2005 6:39 PMYes, Dana. It does.
Posted by: Acidman at May 17, 2005 8:51 PMI only Google myself to make sure my name isn't popping up in strange places. Like the legal dept. of my company. Fortunately a namesake Kiwi has his wine all over the net. I don't show up till, like, page 100.
Posted by: Velociman at May 17, 2005 9:06 PMIf you want to freak yourself out, ZabaSearch yourself. It's creepy.
Posted by: kc at May 17, 2005 10:58 PMI cant say where I am or how I know him in case he reads this. He seems genuinely happy and he has a pregnant wife and is not returning to baseball.
Posted by: wont say at May 18, 2005 12:19 AMAs that "needed a life" guy who created the "Mark Wohlers Obsession Page" some years back (I think it might've been the first web page I ever attempted to design), I get constant e-mail from folks who think I had some main contact with him, asking me what he's doing, if he'll ever play again... even from members of his own family who've Googled him and found my site frighteningly high on the list of Google entries. But though I couldn't tell you his current status, he was apparently well aware of the site as mentioned it once at some charity signing I attended. He did get married, he got gotten divorced from the evil shrew he initially married who threatened to take him to the cleaners and get sole custody of his daughter or she'd take public something so "horrendous" no one would hire him again. (And in the world of today's baseball, I can't imagine what that would be.)

I had a huge crush on Mark in the late 90's when he was a closer for the Braves. I felt that I could've really helped him through his divorce and got him back on track with his pitching but I never got to the privelege of getting to meet him.
