Any Given Sunday

I was speaking the other day of externalities, those events beyond our control that have inordinate impacts upon us.

Velocidaughter 1 had her first accident this afternoon, and it was a freaking doozy. She pulled out in front of a 4 ton panel truck, which T-boned her on the driver door at about 45 miles per hour (I'm guessing. My friend Bruce, who witnessed it, said the driver was locked down on the brakes, so his 50-55 had to be reduced). The impact rolled her vehicle twice, and it ended up across State Road 13 on its side in the ditch.

She miraculously escaped with ten sutures from various glass cuts. No concussion. When the wrecker finally righted the thing it was bloody hell. Both driver side doors staved in. Windows exploded. Windshield shattered. Roof flattened. Hood crumpled. There is not a quarter panel of the truck untouched. The engine also ran for ten minutes with no oil while Bruce extracted her, the truck having rolled onto the driver side. He didn't turn it off for fear of fire.

Luck. Karma. Joss. It's a hell of a thing to see your child sitting bloodied on the roadside, with two county cops, a Florida state trooper, a fire truck, an EMT unit, trying to figure out what happened. I damn near fainted myself when I realized just how lucky she was. I've seen fatalities, severed limbs, from rollovers like that. Brain damage, disfigurement generally accompanies wreck of this intensity. It was a brutal thing.

A brief aside to say the Mountaineer held up splendidly. To those who disdain SUV's, a polite up yours. That truck is utterly destroyed, but it did its job. It saved my daughter from her folly. Curb weight, sheet metal. Wrap that around your precious cargo. Pity the child in a Mini Cooper.

Luck. Karma. Joss. That site on the side of the William Bartram Trail was a hell of a thing, indeed. But it could have been far, far worse. Fatalism? Never heard of it.

Damn! That's a scary thing. I'm glad to hear that your daughter is okay!

Like I always say -- I'd rather be lucky than smart.

Count your lucky stars V-man.

Thank G*d! V-daughter is one very lucky young lady. I'm assuming she had her seat belt on. Anyway, you'll both be in my prayers. Best, Terry Reynolds

Posted by: Terry Reynolds at February 13, 2005 11:16 PM

Seat belt, aye. Saved her. Brain pan disengaged, however.

Posted by: Velociman at February 13, 2005 11:21 PM

Oh, THANK GOD.

I'll count those blessings with you.

So very glad to hear she's okay.

Posted by: Christina at February 13, 2005 11:48 PM

HOLY F--KING SH-T. Wow.

Extra hugs for everyone for a few days, okay?

Posted by: Mark Shaw at February 13, 2005 11:55 PM

Thanks for the reassurance... My daughter is just gettin' ready to take "her test".

I'm happy that Velocidaughter is ok. Gettin' hit by a truck is never a thing one strives to achieve. But something to be proud of survivin'.

I hope you and your's are ok, and "normal" as a Velicifamily can be.

Posted by: RedNeck at February 13, 2005 11:58 PM

Thank goodness. Indeed.

Posted by: sadie at February 14, 2005 12:23 AM

Horrifying. Walking away from an accident like that with "minor" injuries is a miracle. Regarding the SUV, I know a lawyer who defends car compenies when they find themselves sued following an accident in which the driver was hurt. He told me that he has spoken with scores of "crash experts," and they all agree that the single most important factor in surviving a collision is "vehicle mass." Bigger is better.

I can only imagine how much the experience must have rattled your cage. I'm glad it worked out.

Posted by: Jim - PRS at February 14, 2005 4:22 AM

My kids are 30 and 27 years old now. I don't know how I survived their early years myself.

"Luck. Karma. Joss" most of our babies make it to adulthood, we wonder how, and thank the lucky stars above that they did.

I never felt old until I had kids, especially when they got to the driver's license age.

Velociman, I know exactly how you felt and how you will feel in the days ahead.

Drinking helps, and plenty of drugs. Heh.

Just kidding...I think.

... good God, man... I am so glad she is alright...

Posted by: Eric at February 14, 2005 7:25 AM

Holy crap. I bet the poor thing was scared shitless. Thank god for lucky daughters!

Posted by: Queenie at February 14, 2005 8:34 AM

Thank God for seat belts. Thank Joss she is alright.

Posted by: Sam at February 14, 2005 8:41 AM

Very, very glad she's OK.

Buy yourself another big SUV. They're about giving Excursions away these days.

Posted by: og at February 14, 2005 8:46 AM

Your daughter is one lucky girl! Thank the lucky stars she is okay. Had a similar experience with two of my daughters when they rolled by dodge truck. They didn't have a scratch but the truck was totaled.

Posted by: Michele at February 14, 2005 9:49 AM

Shows that the Good Lord has mercy upon fools. And on their daughters, too.

Seriously Kim, I'm thankful that she, and you, are faring well after such a violent misadventure. I hope also that the Velociwife has had her medicinal brandy to calm the motherly nerves?

My very best wishes go to you all, my friend. Keep 'em safe, and surrounded by much steel, indeed.

I'll drive my Crown Vic, happily surrounded by two tons of the stuff.

Jesus, man. I'm glad that this had the best outcome available.

Posted by: Rankin' Rob at February 14, 2005 12:11 PM

Phew... Thank goodness she's okay, V-man...

Posted by: Jay G at February 14, 2005 12:33 PM

So glad she is OK! My father was an accident photographer with the State Patrol, so I have seen many photos of accidents that did not have such happy endings. The bigger vehical always wins.

You should have heard the lecture my father gave me many years ago when I wanted to buy a Porsche 914....their teeniest, tiniest little car. No way was he going to let me drive around in a toy like that! Now, after owning an SUV, I can't imagine what I was thinking either!! Bigger is better.....my dream car is a Hummer!

As one who's walked away from too many car "accidents"- She is VERY lucky/blessed/insert your version of divine intervention here...

My prayers are with you and your daughter.

Posted by: steelheader at February 14, 2005 4:11 PM

Thank goodness she is ok. Thank goodness.

As a former Firefighter, I can also vouch for the tragic scenes I have pulled up on that did not turn out so well. A forty mile per hour t-bone is not the ideal situation to be put in for one's first MVA. However, if she is smart like her dad, then she will carry away lessons in the defensive operation of a vehicle. These days, you gotta drive like everyone is trying to kill you, even the blue hairs and the red hats.

Posted by: bitterman at February 14, 2005 5:16 PM

Wow! Add me to the chorus of "glad she's okay" sentiments.

Posted by: Jay at February 14, 2005 7:10 PM

wow, she is lucky! I remember the conversation on your blog about buying her an SUV a while back.

Posted by: sugarmama at February 14, 2005 11:09 PM

Thank God!

I can't imagine what you and the Bride endured for those few moments after it happened...and I hope I never have to.

No miatas nor coopers for my gal either.

Kim,
Happy that VDaughter-1 is okay. Ten stiches is a small price to pay for that (I just saw the photos).

Similar to a broadside my wife had in 1998 pulling out of our neighborhood onto US-17. Guy in a small station wagon broadsided her on the driver's side doing about 50. She was driving our (late) '93 Dodge Caravan. It almost rolled but stayed upright. Despite the entire driver's side being knifed in, she walked.

What your daughter experienced was far scarier. Give her a big hug, keep using the seat belts, and get down on another SUV quickly. I suggest a Hummer H2. That will teach those panel trucks.

Glad she's safe.

(Watch out for "silver" hair following this incident!)

Posted by: Dz at February 16, 2005 2:33 AM

Glad that she's ok. Watch out for "silver" hair...

Posted by: Dz at February 16, 2005 3:04 AM

When she is better and y'all start looking for another ride, see if you can find a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo (or a Honda Passport-same vehicle). They weight 4000 pounds DRY and are built on a ladder-frame/six cross-member light-truck chassis. Mine took a rear-end hit by a loaded ten-ton truck at a traffic light. Three of us climbed out and after $6000 worth of repairs I'm driving it today...

Posted by: emdfl at February 16, 2005 1:59 PM

Uh, guys and gals? It was HER FAULT! What if it had been, say, I on a motorcycle instead of a big truck she imposed upon? *She* would have killed *me*!!

Y'all all seem to be cutting her slack because she's young, and female. I hope she gets a whopping fine with that obviously well-deserved citation and is made to pay it with money she earned herself.

Bimbo.
