Castigate
Have you ever castigated someone, and felt like a shit for it, but you had to do it?
1. To inflict severe punishment on. See Synonyms at punish.
2. To criticize severely.

Posted by: mr. helpful at February 5, 2005 4:25 PMYes, I have. And when the person knew he had it coming, it was even worse. I could have let HIM do the castigating and he would have EXCORIATED himself worse than I did. (Check your Funk and Wagnal for that one, too.)
It's just part of the job sometimes.
