My Take

I wasn't going to voice an opinion on whether Texas is Southern, or not. It seems to me, however, that they killed Yankees, so that would qualify them as Southerners, at least insofar as prisoner-of-war status is concerned. My take is, like our cousins in Louisiana, the Southern heritage is a big tent, meaning we have all types of eccentrics to fess up to.

I would also like to say that barbecue is not a verb, whatever the meat stock, and grown men boot-scootin' and line dancin' is too fucking surreal for me. There's a word for that kind of behavior where I come from.

tr.v. bar·be·cued, bar·be·cu·ing, bar·be·cues
To roast, broil, or grill (meat or seafood) over live coals or an open fire, often basting with a seasoned sauce.

But I will agree with you on the dancing part.

Big tent indeed. It's all in your perspective. Where I grew up, you weren't considered southern unless you were from below I-10. Some folks were from way way up north... up near Shreveport. But here's a quiz: Can you correctly diagram this sentence? "Pardon me while I barbeque this cow's ass."

barbecue, n. A whole animal carcass or section thereof roasted or broiled over an open fire or on a spit.

Well, I'm just a proxy-Southerner, but my great'ish uncle several generations back was Lt. Morgan of Kentucky who lead the Morgan's Raiders. Does that help my standing a teeny little bit?

Hell, Indiana should be considered Southern by default. Half of the people here are folks from Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia who ran out of money on the way to Detroit.
