For Driver's license, Louisiana boys must register for draft
ALEXANDRIA (AP) - When Larry Chevalier took his son to get his first driver's license, he was floored to discover that to get it, the boy had to preregister for a nonexistent military draft.''I just can't believe it,'' said Chevalier, whose 16-year-old son, Nathan, did fill out the form to register with the Selective Service so he could get his license.
''They wouldn't let him get it otherwise,'' Chevalier said Saturday.
Even a 15-year-old boy who wants a learner's permit in Louisiana must provide information to be forwarded, when he turns 18, to the Selective Service System, which would run a military draft if one is set up again.
Hey, fucknut: would this be the same Selective Service registration that's been in effect since the Carter Administration (1980)? So they get the information now, but don't pass it on to SSS until the kid turns 18? What's your fucking problem? That's called efficiency.

The SSS never went away. It just doesn't actually DRAFT anybody anymore. But you still have to register when you're 18, and it's been that way for a long time.

Laws and regulations for the Selective Service already exist at the Federal level and they've been working just fine for a shitload of years. There is no mandate or support from the feds for supplemental restrictions or legislation on the state level. It is an additional level of beaurocracy and expense for no benefit or return.
It isn't an increase in efficiency. How could it be? It adds an additional step, unnecesary storage of data, a new mandatory record review cycle, addition of error vectors. It's a layer of red tape that is totally and completely unnecessary.
As for the Mommy-hold-my-hand reasoning they have for the law, screw that. You don't register within a month of your 18th birthday you are a felon in absentia and you can't get your government cheese. If that isn't enough of a reason to get kids to take care of their own shit then screw 'em. They need to grow up some time and 18 is the generally recognized kicking-the-ass-out-the-door marker.
My only problem is that chicks don't have to register. We need to fix that. Our boys need more tail on hand.
Plus, you know they're only doing this so they can be ready to lower the draft age to 15. ;)
