HEDONISM IN THE RIVER CITY
No, I'm not going to talk about The Game. The Game, at least this year's edition, can kiss my ass. I would like to talk about SEC crowds, however. There are two great old schools that exemplify the Old Tradition of college football in the South. Georgia and Ole Miss. When you go to their games, the women, hell, the Girls, are decked to the nines. And the Boys wear blazers and ties. I went to an Ole Miss-Georgia game in Oxford a few years ago and that type of tradition is still there. Alabama has that Old South thing going on, too, to a lesser degree. Florida doesn't have that type of tradition. This is Neckbone Country. They are mere beasts, recently risen from the primordial fever swamps.
At Georgia-Florida the Georgia fans don't play the Old South game either, though. This game is The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, and those Georgia kids leave their little traditions at the state line. This is a hedonistic free-for-all in neutral territory, where Anything Goes. A vacation from Tradition, as it were, while maintaining a singularly different tradition at the same time. And I must say this, and The Bride would concur: flesh-pound for flesh-pound, the Georgia-Florida game brings into eight very cool acres the finest assemblage of Beautiful Women in the world. The mind, literally, boggles. And THAT is one of the many reasons I like this town.
That, and the fact my daughters are going to be Florida Gators. I bow to the inevitable. The school is 60 miles from my door, and their friends will go there. The upside? I can get hammered at the game, and not care who wins. SOMEBODY in my house will be happy.
Your kids are smart enough to go to Virginia, Chapel Hill, or perhaps Yale, and you're sending them to Gainesville, Florida?
They will disappoint you greatly.

It is way too hot in the Swamp in September to wear blazers and ties, which is why we don't have that tradition in Gainesville. Nobody else who comes to play there wears a coat and tie either.
Florida used to have many other fine traditions, but I understand most of them have been rendered illegal by the onslaught of political correctness. Certainly my whole career there would be considered felonious today.

Posted by: CW at November 4, 2003 1:45 PMFor Mr. Straw: I turned down Virginia, Chapel Hill, and Stanford to go to Gainesville (I wouldn't even apply to Yale, where heterosexuals are referred to as "breeders" and are rabidly discriminated against), am glad I did, and would do it again. Each of those schools have specific programs that are probably better than UF in narrow areas, but overall UF offers more and better education than all of them. Florida leads the nation in more different areas than those other schools put together - plus (at least when I went there) we led the nation in partying, too.
As I said, Go Gators. Kim is a wise man.

We partied a bit, too.
I would prefer my niece go to a smaller school where the administrators and professors actually know the students. Too much anonymity at the really large schools; some carney comes through town, scores some good dope, and shanghies your daughter to be his third wife. You won't see her again until you go to the Coastal Empire Fair and pay $3.00 to find out why they call her the Dog Lady.
See, Jack, I'm not spending $40,000 a year to send my girls to a Marxist indoctrination camp. My elder daughter actually wants to be a professor of American Literature. It's her dream. I don't have the heart to tell her she can't get a PhD in that field unless she wants to do her dissertation on "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings".

Godammit they better beat the shit out of Rix. I'm tired of hearing that FSU deserves to be number 2 more than USC does. FSU has looked horrible this year, and got walloped at home by an average Miami team.
