THE LIMELIGHT

I swear I went down this path before, but a desultory scan of my archives turns up nothing, so here we go:

In that world that was 1979-1980 Atlanta, the Limelight was THE PLACE TO BE. The hottest discoteque on the East Coast. When Studio 54 was shut down over tax issues the glitterati jet-setted to Atlanta to party at the Slimelight. Even the parking lot was twisted. Peolple fucking left and right, popper capsules littered the ground.

I had a pretty good "in" there. A few mates and I had them sponsor our law school intramural football team. Got fancy T-shirts and everything. On Fridays they let us in for free. The cover charge back then was about $12, which was huge. They had a pulsating dance floor with a shark underneath it in a tank. They originally had a tiger, but the ASPCA raised holy hell over the noise, and they replaced it with the shark. They had coke rooms with mirrored tables, and huge speakers you could climb upon and dance. The stairways were lined with alcoves with live models in ski wear and beach wear. Think about that: live models. Paid to affect a pose for 8 hours.

Every Friday we'd show up and claim we'd won our game and they would let us in for free (one can never have too many law students on retainer). One night a fat guy fell off the speakers and crashed through the dance floor. Missed the shark tank by two feet.

Those were crazy days. Punk rock, bulletproof alibis, cocainum. Used to go in there whacked on acid and do lines to straighten up! We used to carry dildoes in our back pockets. Why? I don't know! Can't believe I got out of there alive. Every month or so I scrub extra well in the shower for good measure, and shake my head.

I went there a few times in 1984 when I was in the Military. I remember getting laid out in the parking lot. And then later going to celebrations there in Atlanta.

Excellent times spent at the Limelight, my favorite club. I was 17 years old back then, well, i had a perfect 21 years old fake ID.
The nicest gils, the craziest parties: Wet and Wild, Bare as you there,....so many good memories. I remember peter arriving with his white excallibur.
I used to dance on top of the huge speakers wearing my piano tie, the latest in fashion....
Well that was around 1982. Good memories...

I'm looking for the former doorman named Jeff -
he used to work the Limelight in Chicago in the late 80's then moved to Atlanta to work the Limelight/Petrus there ......
I heard a rumor from a co-worker that he got busted with cocaine and was doing time ....
this would have been in late 1990.
is there any truth to this, and where is he now?
If anyone has any info on his whereabouts,
PLEASE EMAIL ME!!
Thank you, Denise

I loved the Limelight. Danced my ass off in RED silettos and white lacy ankle socks up on the speakers on the left side of the stage. Did coke in the bathroom...cool black lady worked in there and would hand you towels to dry your hands. I loved the 'green' room and watched movies drunk. I glad I lived during the Limelight era. Loved the disco Kroger!!!

Britt -

Did you ever party there in 89 or 90?
YOu say you were a doorman - did you happen to know the doorman Jeff.... he was tall with shoulder length brown hair and blue eyes...
I seem to recall Charlie Tuna as well....

The Limelight was the best club that Atlanta will ever have. I dont' think it's possible for a place to have all the exitement and energy that Limelight did. I was one of those "Twinkies " that hung out by the speakers and danced. I sure do miss those days. Every time I drive by the location on piedmont road, I have to look over at the Disco Kroger and think about old times. I sure an glad I was a part of it.

What an incredible place! I worked at 81-82 when I was just 18 (legal drinking age and to get liquor permit). I live in Southern California now but Limelight remains one of my fondest memories of Atl. I first went there summer of 1980 with 2 incredibly hot 16 year old girls (hey I was 18)I met at lake Lanier:Janie King and Katie Baird (I still remember them)and had a great time. It had only been open a few months. A year later I learned Marta, neighbor that used to babysit me when I was five, was dating the GM Brian R.(rumor was he was ex-Green Beret..and I learned to believe it)and she got me a job as a bouncer (I was always big for my age and looked older). What a fun job! I have all kinds of stories like the time the guy passing counterfeit $100 bills shot his way out of the office (bullet went thru the door, grazed a girls belt, and into the wall) and the crowd never knew. I saw a ton things like that. Anybody remember Duncan, the head door guy?

I think that what made Limelight so special was a unique convergence of things. First and foremost the music. Disco had pretty much run it's course and artists in the US and especially Europe were experimenting with new sounds. The early 80's were really significant musically as Techno, Dance were evolving. The music was just fun and appealled to everyone: straight, gay, black, white, it didn't matter. I've actually compiled bunch of the songs from the club playlist and am making a CD. Artists, Like Yaz, Billy Idol, Sylvester, Lime, Madleen Kane,Weather Girls, Miguel Brown,Divine,...around 40 so far. If anyone remembers songs/artists please contact me. Secondly the sound system at Limelight was astounding! I've lived in South Beach, been to clubs in LA, NY, Paris, Berlin, etc. and I've never heard a sound system that pushed music THROUGH you like Limelight's did.

Does anyone have any pictures of the inside of Limelight? (especially the dance floor and lights)

I was in college at the time and living in Bowling Green, KY - but it was nothing for me and my buddies to hop in the car on Friday afternoons after class and make the drive to Atlanta and dance at the Limelight until 2:00 AM, then go to the Saint until 10:00 AM - go to Denny's for breakfast and make that drive home. We did this at least once a month for the entire four years in college. It was the hottest place on earth to us and we were the twinks dancing on the speakers! Damn, I miss that place. We also used to skate in Piedmont Park if we stayed around on Saturdays! Man, what a life we had then.....

I lived up north near Chattanooga back then. We used to love coming down on Sunday afternoons for "Tea". Those were some real parties, sometimes can't remember how I got home.
Being a Disc Jockey, I met with some of the DJ's when I got the chance. I drove out to Huntsville, AL with my friend, Steve (also a DJ) and met Randy Easterling.. He's one hell of a nice guy. He made some recordings of his work and signed them for Steve and we met him at his home and spent the entire night with him at Patricks(?) in H-ville.

Not sure what made me google the Limelight but interesting that I did. I also worked security there 80-81 (remember the flashlights?) The red room glass booths......WOW. Actually got to be an escort for Brooke Shields and Phylis Diller while there. The theater, the balcony, the DJ room, the laser light room, the Hustler photo shoots upstairs. Partied in them all. Also met my first wife there. The most energetic place I have ever been to in my life and will always remember being a part of the era.

I'd love to hear from anyone from this time.

Ahhhhhh the memories of our youth....lol. I can still remember the first time I walked through the door in limelight......Randy E was originally from Huntsville, Al. and me and a guy named Brian P used to set up his sound system in a club named After Dark. He usually blew the bass speakers there...lol. Anyway when we walked through the doors it just blew our minds and I do mean literally. We ended up so wiped that night...lol. Needless to say we visited frequently. Those were the days and like several before me have intoned-there will never be another club like that one. The kids today dont have a clue and nor should they.....lol Ill never tell

I loved that club; great times early 80's! i remember the tiger and the big fuss to take it out! many years later when i moved to missouri and met my husband, found out he was there same times, same parties - but we never met back then. I remember dancing with Dan Hagerty one night when he wandered in; and on the speakers many a night! havin' way too much fun!

Posted by: nancy99 at April 15, 2008 12:58 PM

I LOVED IT. I was a waiter at a place called Paliachi's on Maple St in Buckhead at the time and used to go dancing until it closed three or four nights a week. I owned the speakers to the left of the stage with a bunch of others. For a white guy I could go and the D J loved my ass on that speaker in front of him. He had a drink waiting on me when I got down. Too bad I'm wasn't gay. The women were incredible. I'm old and fat now but at least I have those memories.
Thanks
Steve

I was the Senior Technical Director at the Limelight in Atlanta from 1984 to 1987. I remember Tito Accosta and Randy Easterling; two of the most talented “live artists” ever. Anyone know what happened to Tito? One of them had a Prince medley that was a great mix and I still have it on cassette, although it probably won’t play. I also have hours of reel to reel audio recorded over some of the era that I can’t find a machine to playback on now either. I’m still an audio engineer but the lighting system there was also over the top.
Jimmy Hollingsworth, the Artistic Director had a real “lust” for me but I was straight. The place was five women to one man every night; a great place to work accordingly. One of the most devoted “Twinkies” during my era was Katrina. She would appear about 9pm every night and dance alone in front of bar five/six. She was tall with long black hair and lots of black eyeliner; kind of the “Morticia A. Addams” look. She was really sweet and I often wonder what happened to her too. I wonder where all of the folks are now and how many of us have survived.

I saw some video recently uploaded on You-Tube of the club in action.
