JOE SAVAGE

Sorry. AGAIN I regress. But I exist to touch those festering topics no sane person would touch in my stead. Consider me the wet leprosy of the blogosphere.

Remember Joe Savage? Probably not. He had a touring band that played the South, and Lord knows where else, in the early eighties. His schtick? He looked like a 35-year-old Telly Savalas in Sophia Loren's make up. His wife played with him, and she was a leather-clad hot thing.

Joe's gig was to play a bar, and after passing around a bottle of Jack Daniels', pouring it into the crowd's gaping maws while singing "Free Booze", he would then pull out a chain saw and CUT YOUR TABLE IN HALF. Literally. That was fun, especially if you were with people who'd never seen it.

Joe had a limited repertoire, with highlights being Neil Diamond's America and the aforementioned Free Booze.

Joe had a feline that was half manx and half bobcat. It mauled a little girl in Savannah about 1984 and Joe was banned from the city forever.

Joe Savage. Why do I remember shit like this? Allah must be punishing me.

I can recall Joe Savage being at "Reds" in Akron back in the 80's. He had a Boa constrictor then and his "schtick" was to disappear by climbing into the false ceiling and then reappearing at your table. He happened to grab me the only night I saw him, and took me with him on stage. We partied! Seems like the girls love entertainers.GM

I saw him at a bar called "Remington's" in Savannah in '83. He cut MY table in half. His 5 year old son was killed by one of his pet leopards in about '88.

Posted by: ebd10 at November 13, 2003 4:04 AM

I actually played with his band in '74 - '75. Most notable would be the review in a Kansas City newspaper that stated that our music was "what we would all be forced to listen to if Hitler had won the war". A splendid time was guaranteed for all.

Posted by: Uncle Frank at November 19, 2003 2:48 PM

I actually saw Joe Savage with the band "Wizard" in the mid 70's in Massachsetts. The band was great played a lot of Led Zepplin and Joe had his Boa Constrictor and performed with it hidden under a cape. Anyone know any of them are now?

Posted by: Sharon at December 8, 2003 12:58 AM

Joe was living in Nashville. His 3 year old daughter was mauled to death in Nashville suburbs (where he lived) by one of his exotic cats. He was a big advocate for "owning exotic cats" and He was on the news in Nashville right after his daughter was killed saying he still thought that people should be allowed to own wild animals, yada yada yada.

He played a lot in Vegas too in the late 80's. I remember driving through and seeing his name on a marquee there...

I don't know if he's still living in Nashville (or the area) or not as I moved away and have been traveling pretty much since then.

Posted by: Ellen at December 15, 2003 11:11 PM

i sang with joe for 9 or so years.......no i wasnt his wife ! his wife never sang with him.as far as any children being mauled by the exotic cat {which happened to be a spotted leopard named taboo}the only one was his very own daughter, my god daughter and she unfortunately did not survive the attack.Joe is alive and well in nashville tn. and as ever, is working on a new stage production featuring the cotton club theme.thought you'd like to know the real story. sincerly, Lee hirsch aka. lee marquett

I remember this, her name was Nikka Joe Savage and she was two years old. Her mother's name was Kim and little Nikka was adorable! I saw her just a few weeks before her tragic accident. She was in MD visiting family. I hear Kim has since had a son.

Posted by: Ree at September 16, 2004 6:38 PM

Yes, Joe Savage is alive and well and is preparing to revive "The Joe Savage Experience".
The premiere show is scheduled for November 4, 2004 at ALLEYGATORS Underground Lounge in Printers Alley in Nashville, TN. Joe has been called "The King of Commando Rock", "The wild man of rock and roll" and you never know what he's going to do next. This act contains adult language, adult content and is not meant for wimps. Be there if you dare.

Posted by: Cliff at October 14, 2004 11:18 PM

Joe and his band played our wedding in 1976 at a club in Nashua NH called "The Brothers Four". It was an awesum gig. There were over 1000 in attendance, we personally knew only about 100 of those people as the club was open to the public and our wedding was part of the evening. Him and his band played the club frequently and when my wife and I set our wedding date the owner of the club asked us who we wanted to play the wedding and we chose Joe and his band. Joe was wild back then and I've always wondered what he's been doing since then.

Posted by: Stephen Rich at December 29, 2004 8:47 AM

For some very strange reason Joe Savage popped into my head. He was playing in Baton Rouge way back when I was only 18..now I am 44. He had the snake then. I was a cocktail waitress at the club and had a huge crush on him. I ended up spending the night with him and that ended my crush.
what a trip that he is still out there performing.

I am *SO* happy to see postings from Joe and Lee I can't even tell you! I saw them repeatedly in the NY and CT suburbs in the early 80's and absolutely had the time of my life each and every night.

Now I'm 40+ and in California. I've probably seen hundreds of bands including the big names from Metallica to Ramones to Everclear to Nine Inch Nails. I still put the Joe Savage Band up there with any of them.

Thanks and best to you all!

I remember Joe at the Fore'n'aft in Brewster, N.Y. carving his signature in the wall with his memorable chain saw in the early 80's Does anyone remember that?

Posted by: JoAnn at January 3, 2005 7:24 PM

Hey, JoAnn!

The Fore'n'aft - that was one of the clubs where I saw Joe, Lee, and the rest of the band. Great place to see them, especially when compared to Gemini II (Tarrytown?)where I saw them more often.

The more I think about it, the more I remember. The bottles of Jack poured into the crowed, the chainsaw, Lee's Janis Joplin tributes, Joe coming out in a Zoot suit one time (or so I remember it). Whoa!

Posted by: Jon at January 9, 2005 1:40 AM

I saw Joe's show in the mid 70's in Lincoln Nebraska at a place called "Little Bo's." I thought his performance was great.

I interviewed him a day or so later for the Daily Nebraskan, the University of Nebraska's recognized newspaper.

I remember the snake, he telling me he was a former Captain in the U.S. Army, and had a shaved bald head . . . when that was "different."

I didn't see a chainsaw, though.

One of his signature tunes was "Fire", by, I believe, the Chambers Brothers.

Wow, a long time ago.

Man Joe did a stint at the Treasure Island Resort in Grand Cayman, I am just reminiscing about it with an old girlfriend as I type this. He dragged her up on the stage with her High Heel Boots and made her stand on him while he sat on a bed of nails.

What a crazy cat, his first night he started too early and as he was cutting out of his coffin he cut through the TV projection Screen he was behind! He used to grab Bottles of JD from the bar and pour it down everyone's throat.

Does anyone know how GiGi his daughter is doing? She came down a few times to Cayman while I was working at the Hotel, she was a chip off the old block too. What a great guy he was back then, it really shook up the staid island that Cayman was.

That was a brilliant time and next time I am in Nashville on business I will look to see if the Experience is performing.

Joe, Aloha from the Caymans mate, we will never forget you!

Posted by: Paul from Cayman at January 19, 2005 12:38 PM

No....no..Paul, GiGi (actually Gee Gee) was not Joe's daughter. She was a friend of ours from Baltimore. The rest was fairly accurate, though...

Posted by: David...Joe's guitarist at January 22, 2005 12:26 AM

Thank's David, She had mentioned that to us, probably to keep us local boys away :). I am talking to Joe now, I was one of the bartenders at TI, so we more than likely met, it was a brilliant time.

Cheers

What a show Joe the man performed. My friend and I transformed from drunken, obnoxious snake-taunting naysayers to believers in Joe and his showmanship magic. All I can say is that after I saw JOE perform at the Rock Factory in Carmichael, California in 1984, my whole outlook on life changed for the better--And it had nothing to do with the fact that I got lucky that night.
My (ex)wife wouldn't let me name our firstborn Joseph (we named her Michelle), but if my (recently conceived) next child is male--I'm liking the sound of little "Joey Gee".

I remember Joe Savage from the Buttercup in Lunenburg Mass. and Dub's in Gainseville Florida in the mid 70s. Far and away the most entertaining act I've seen.

One of his Boas got lost in the Buttercup and surfaced some weeks later, none the worse for wear.

I was only a child when my mom met Mr Savage, but I used to listen to his album all of the time. No one else can hold a candle to him and his style. I am 31 now and remember it like it was yesterday. He touched lives that he never even met.

Keep in touch. Joe Savage might be doing my bike rally here in Tenn. He got with some guys at my friends bar and liked them well enough to see if they would back him so he can get out there and do giggs. He did 2 songs there and sounded great. He certainly got the folks up out of there seats. So go to Thunder Roads Magazine and look up calender of events in Tenn. to see more of this great rally sure to come.

I'm glad to hear that that nutty Joe Savage is still doing it. I played drums for Joe from 1978 till 1981. Working with Joe truly made me into a most rounded musician. He made me appreciate so many more styles of music. Joe always had a knack for entertaining ages 6 to 96. We used to go from polka "Roll out the Barrel" to big band " Old Black Magic" complete with horns, to rock " Aqualung". 24 years later, I'm still playing for BJ Thomas. Thanks again Joe. LARRY

Very flattering:) Actually I was not and do not believe I ever told anyone I was Joe's daughter. His girlfriend Kim at the time was actually my niece even though I am younger than her. That was a great time. I was in Nashville visiting Kim this past week and Joe came to meet us for dinner and he told me my name was on this site and I just had to check it out. Hope everyone is doing well. I was a kid then I am now 32 and married and have a beautiful 11 month old son. Take Care everyone those were some great times!

Hi Friends, My wife and I were friends with Joe way back in the mid 70's. He performed a lot in the Boston and Southern NH area. We enjoyed many shows, had the pleasure of sharing dinners with Joe - including one Thanksgiving. We were at the wedding at the Brothers 4 club mentioned in an earlier post. I have some great photos from back then and believe it or not, maybe even an audio tape. Lessee I think that the group was called "The Band with a THUD!" Joe, if you read this, write and say hello. We have happy memories that we have shared with our children - both of whom are in college. I am amazed and delighted to have come across this site.

There's absolutely not enough room on this page or in this commentary to describe Joe Savage. Kinda like King Kong's human son...The Mighty Joe Savage! i will always remember joe as part of my wildest days as a teen on into my early twenties. i use to watch him play at the brass A at hickory hollow court yard in antioch tn everytime i could. i will never forget on my 20th birthday(since a passed the liquor law by 16 days) joe called me to the stage and lee held me backwards so joe could pour jack daniels down my throat while wishing me a happy birthday. i dont know which was better, joe pouring J.d. or lee holding me cause she was so hot. i really miss his shows & the snake and large cats. my deepest sympathies go out to joe for the loss of his daughter. he was and i will say probably still is the best stage show act of all time. just keep on rockin joe, you are the man.

Joe Savage is the stage name of a fine singer and entertainer who began his career while stationed at Myrtle Beach, S.C. as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. He hired me as his bass player in 1968 when I was working at "Kitten's Corner" in Charlotte, N.C. His bass and keys had left to join Billy Joe Royal's band. By then, he was a partner in a steak house and show bar in Newton, N.C. Joe was a very talented singer and entertainer with a repertoire that spanned standards and show tunes to top 40 and underground FM hits. Al Del Russo was his guitarist and Bobby Monaco the drummer. He was and excellent entertainer even then. I split in March of '70 to come to Toronto where I worked with Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins ("Mary Lou". "Down In The Alley") etc. Joe had just bought his first cat and he was starting to hunger for a larger audience. He took a road date in Washington at "Anthony's Steak House" as I headed north. My brother in law sat next to him on a plane, years later, and they spoke. That's how I learned of his present stage name. I have been a music educator and acoustic bass/electric bassist in Canada until the present. I would love to hear from Joe. Joe, google my first initial and last name, @yahoo.com. Best wishes,
Sam The Baptist

I'm glad I've found this site because I have been wondering for years if Joe Savage was still performing. I saw his show only once about 25 years ago at a restaurant/lounge named the Breakers in a city on the Gulf coast. It was the most amazing show I have ever seen and right down my alley combining rock 'n roll and showmanship. Very entertaining to say the least. Joe Savage rocks! I would love to see his show again. Mr. Savage, I humbly ask you to let us know of your future plans and where we might see you perform. Do you have a web site? I'll try to see a show as soon as possible and perhaps meet you. I remember the crazy life of Joe and the band in the early in the early 80's. I'm searching for two band members: David McCullough and Binky Buckwalter. If anyone knows their e-mail address please let me know.
I just saw Joe for the first time in about 18 years. He is still as crazy as ever.

I too just saw Joe's show at Tangiers in Akron. I was his sound man for four years around 1980. Good to see you again Joe! I am so glad to see postings from the great musicians that I had under my figertips at the soundboard - David and Lee & Larry. I hope to track down Binky & Puddly & Jay somehow (Email me, you fellow crazies!). I still have about 100 hours of soundboard-quality recordings on cassette from those years. I live in the Akron area 'cause that's where I fell off the tour with Joe. Still running sound, too. JS is proof positive that not all the best acts make it big. There's luck and timing and kissing the right ass - something Joe steadfastly refused to do (one of your many admirable qualities, Joe).

Hey Joe, Hi, How are you? I don't know if you remember me or not I was a close friend of Bob Dorman. It meant alot to me that you and Lee showed up for his funeral. You are a great performer as well as a free spirt who is not afraid to speak his beliefs. LIVE FREE OR DIE!!!! God bless you and your family, congrats on your son. There can never be enough people like you in the world!!!!!!!!! Alive and well and married, living in Stow Oh. Love to see the new band. Missed you in Dec. LOVE Bo'nney

I too saw Joe at Tangiers in Akron in Nov. 2005. Took me back to the 80's when I worked as a Matre'D at Harrah's Casino Stateline Cabaret in Lake Tahoe Nevada.
Joe played there a bunch of times and totally blew the roof off the place. The whole town went absolutely nuts.
Lee, Binky, Jay and David were in the band then and they were just awesome. They did tunes from zeppelin, heart, springsteen plus the old standards too.

Parachuttes over the audience, snakes, cats, make-up, conga lines thru the casino. Joe pulled out all the props back then.
We partied a lot at his condo afterwards.

Everyone still talks about it there. Some of my favorite memories of the 80's. Thanks Joe!

Hey Joe!

You used to play the Foxfire lounge in the Cascades, in Ocala, Florida back in the late 70s. My parents loved your show, and to this day my mom maintains you're still one of the best. My dad was in radio then - I don't know if you knew him, his name is Gene.

You did a kids show once during the day - I remember I was 8 or so, and I thought you were the coolest thing since my Big Wheels.

I'll be looking around online for CDs or downloads. Here's to finding some, and if you're ever near Raleigh NC I will be there with bells on!

Keep rockin',
Heidi

Whow, I just thought about this.
as a matter of fact, I think about it frequently.
I saw Joe Savage in Spartanburg SC @ a club called Remingtons in the early 80s.
I remember I was Tripping my ass off on acid.
I remember Joe singing the song " FIRE ", and two chicks wearing tiny leopard skin outfits, twirling flaming batons. Man that was too cool.
I remember the chain saw thing too.
Joe You Rock Dude.
That show stands out in my mind more than most other concerts I have been to !!!!!!!!!!!

I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Joe last night. I had never seen one of his acts but he is truly an Italian gentleman. Joe if you read this blog. I have to tell you that the numbers you did with Bob, Billy and (sorry I forgot the drummers name)... were awsum. I wish all of you the best of luck in your current endeavor. I had a fanttastic time in Nashville because of this gentleman what a showman he really knows how to wow the crowd.

Hello,

This is Jessica, Michael Martin's (RIP) daughter, a guitar player for Joe in the 1980's. I had the great pleasure of traveling with Joe and every one else. It was a time in my life that I will NEVER forget. It was fun watching Joe cut his way out of a coffin and carry the huge snakes on stage, which by the way scared me to death. From what a remember Joe is a very smart and fun man, who made a lasting impression on me. Thank you Joe.

Posted by: Jessica Martin at April 2, 2006 6:40 PM

I had the chance to see Joe Savage through the 80's and don't recall a Michael Martin on guitar. Perhaps you mean the 70's or 90's?

Posted by: Tim at April 6, 2006 3:16 AM

It was in the 80's because I wasn't alive in the 70's and I finally started school in 1990. so it was in the late 80's.

Posted by: Jessica Martin at April 8, 2006 1:04 PM

Jessica,

(very respectfully)Sorry, you must be thinking about another band or another time (early 90s? perhaps). I saw them many times in the 80s, no such guitar player. It was a Dave or David.

Posted by: Tim at April 10, 2006 9:31 PM

I don't mean to be rude at all but I would remember since I was on the road with them.. we traveled many places such as Alaska and Wis.. I have many pictures and posters. I know that it was Joe Savage and I know that it was not the early 90's because like I stated before I went to school in 1990 right after we got off the road with Joe. I will have to send you some of the posters and pictures sometime :)

Posted by: Jessica Martin at April 15, 2006 3:33 AM

So where exactly is Joe performing these days. I would love to catch his act again?

Posted by: Joe Fan at April 15, 2006 8:38 PM

Jessica,

It doesn't really matter. I have know doubt that your dad played with JS. I'm out of work and have little to do but surf the net. However, I do stand by what I Know to be true. I saw the act through the 80s and sawthem as late as Nov, 1989. Unless you were both in Alaska and Wis in Dec '89....I submit that you were on the road in Spring/summer 1990 and started school in the fall of that year. Is that possible?

obviouslly bored,

Tim

Posted by: Tim at April 16, 2006 12:14 AM

I'm sorry... You must be right because clearly you were there and I was not.. I must have been playing make believe while traveling the US with the band. We could have had a wonderful conversation about the band if you had not been so closed minded. Have a Great Day :)

Posted by: Jessica Martin at April 16, 2006 6:07 PM

Jessica,
A couple of things: 1)This is my last post as I will be starting a new job tomorow!! and will have little free time B)I'm embarassesd by choosing to continue this, given your tragect loss and your obvious irritation with me, sorry. c)However, I just confirmed mymemories with (Grand Caymen)plane tickets, signe dphotos etc, and do not know why you still claim as you do. Let's let Joe ( I noticed he sometimes posts) tell us. You owe me a pizza if your dad played before 1990.
Never intended to generate anger; please sincerly accept my Happy E. wishes to you . good luck.

Man, does this take me back. Back to Akron, OH at a place called Reds. My friend took me there one night to see this guy called Joe Savage. He said it's a wild show and he's a wild man. Sure was. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I remember him singing a song about a bear skin rug.

Best wishes with your new band and tour, Joe.

I saw Joe back in the 80's at The Chance in Poughkeepsie NY. I have no idea why I went to see him then (having never heard of him previously) but I know why I still remember him now. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Really amazing!

Posted by: Jay at April 27, 2006 2:54 PM

I saw Joe twice in either `80 or `81 at a lounge (Mr. Tease or Mr. T's ?) at a hotel in Florida not too far from Patrick AFB where I was stationed. The first time I saw him he had the snake, which made a beeline to me (I was at the little railing bar around the stage). The second time he had one of the cats (I believe it was a mountain lion) with the most beautiful eyes. What I recall most was some gal in the audience being offended by Joe's flirting with her... she threw a drink on him... a bit later Joe came over with a large coffee cup shaped like a boob and poured it over her. I still have the articles on Nikka being mauled (and a neighbor woman dying in a car accident rushing home to check on her cattle after hearing of the cats escaping). The cat, Tabu, died after being tranquilized. This is a quote from Joe about Nikka's death taken from the Arizona Republic "There are certain things that transpire on Earth that have no real answers. In my mind, it was a force of destiny. In my mind, Tabu, the animal involved, was an instrument of God". Anyhow... I am very glad I found this posting because it brought back memories of Joe in his glory, snake, big cat, chain saw, and that attitude that rocked the house. ~Jim in Phoenix, Arizona

I remember seeing Savage at L'Amours in Brooklyn - he had a gallon of Jack that he was throwing out yelling "This is from Twisted Fucking Sister" - and then he proceded to cut the stage and ceiling up. The L'Amours staff had to stop him - it was hysterical.

Posted by: CB at July 2, 2006 3:38 PM

I saw him there a few times. That was a great room. I don't know if it is still there. I moved. Also saw him at Blackbeards and Speaks on Long Island; they're probably gone too. The band was kick-ass.

I had the wonderfully good fortune to have played with Joe in the mid 80's. After hearing about me from a friend of his, Joe drove up from Nashville to the Kona Kai lounge in Bowling Green, Ky. and hired me for his legendary show. In many ways, my life was changed entirely by this great man. He helped to set in to motion a chain of events that allow me to do what I now do for a living. Today, I am a studio musician and arranger - but I'll always remember so fondly the times I shared with the stage with the unadulterated Mad Man of Rock and Roll and our incredible band. Anyone who has ever seen Joe has been affected by him - and for
the better. God bless the man.

He would leave his Snake in the back room in a case one day the thing got out and i called Floyd Wilkinson the Owner of the Bar and told him. That someone needed to come and put that damm Snake away and i was done working at that bar. Joe had one of the best stage shows i have ever seen i remember trying to pick up his mike stand that thing had to be about 100 pounds. i don't know what joe's doing now but he was the best.

Hey Lee, David and Joe,

Someone's gotta represent the awesome shows you guys put on in Little Rock, Arkansas back in the early 1980's.

Joe and the gang would come through about once a year and put on two shows a night at Cajuns Wharf. The early show was more MOR with a little of that special showmanship that Joe was so good at. Then, the late show at 10:30pm, they rocked out! Henrix, Black Sabbath (Neon Nights was the best!).

I was working for a TV station back then and shot some footage of the band...all the explosions, Joe flicking his tounge at the snake...etc..., it's all there. I gotta pull that footage and see if it's still on the tapes! 25 years + old.

Hope to hear more from you guys and fans...if you are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, be sure to let this board know Joe...I would love to see you again!

Sincerely,

Chuck Johnson

I used to see Joe Savage perform at the Gemini in Yorktown Heights, NY and the Fore N Aft in Brewster, NY. He was really great. He had the boa then and my sister and I loved seeing him perform. I also knew his keyboard player, Jay, really well. I would love to know if he is still playing somewhere. I would love to take my 16 year old son, Nicky, who would definitely love seeing him perform.

I had the pleasure of seeing Joe in a little bar in upstate NY. Joe had gotten snowed out of NYC and was playing for the snowed in Dr Dirty.
It was one of the most memerable bar gigs I haver ever seen. It included Joe disappearing into a suspended ceiling while still singing and shedding layer after layer of snake like costums. One poor female patron petrified by the snake ran into the ladies room only to have joe send it in after her. Glad to hear he is still out there!

All I can do is let my former words do my talking. Excuse me for taking up so much space, but I'm betting the following will help many of you relive your Joe experiences.

So, from a Joe obsessed novel I started in the mid 80's "In Search of Joe" about a night a friend and I brought my mother to a show at Cheers in Nashville, a night my friend was embarrased post giving Joe sexy limericks she wrote for him, snipped from Chapter 8:

"Finally Joe appeared. I woo'd, Susan gazed at the ashtray and mom frowned. She looked about, rolled her fingers, fidgeted and yawned. (snip) Before long, step by step, strut by strut, that savage brought out the beast in my mother. How dare him corrupt MOTHER! She clapped, she rocked, she tapped her foot and wore a smile from east to west. Occasionally she blushed and lost her breath. (snip)

"Joe more than performed. He gave so much of himself. He partied, he celebrated. (snip) The energy, power and exuberance was endless. Joe, Lee and the band conjured up joyful spirits and cast a spell on the entire audience. (snip)

"Joe did everything we'd seen him do before and more, all in one night! He went out into the audience and climbed on some girl's lap and took another in his arms and kissed her passionately. Midway through is performance of 'Makin Love on the Buffalo Rug' he threw a gal on the rug and jumped on top of her.

"He said 'Fuck it' and even had us singing 'Fuck it,' which embarrassed mom to no end, very much the 'lady,' and a 3rd grade Catholic school teacher mind you. He beeped a horn and joked around. He danced, strutted, girated and swung on his trapeze. He shot off his microphone and fireworks jetted from spouts on either side of the stage whirling a cloud of smoke into the audience. Provocatively, bit by teasing bit, he stripped off some of his clothes and drove the women wild.

"He enraptured mom. She put him right up there with her Frankie S. whom she'd been a fan of since she was 16 years old. Why, when she was 16, she'd waited on line for 6 hours to see Frankie. Through the years she remained his adoring fan and swooned 'ooo Frankie' whenever she saw or heard him. There were other performers she enjoyed and admired but no one was ever brought up to the same level as 'ol blue yes.' Now, some 40 odd years later, someone was. Joe was. (snip)

"Midway through set B, pulling himself up on the trapeze, Joe pointed his feet toward the ceiling, then twisted, turned and jerked about like a baited shark being manuevered to the water's surface. Upon landing, he spotted mom. (snip) Her eyes widened and she clenched her hand as Joe stepped down off the stage and sauntered toward her. The closer he got the wider her eyes and tighter her fist. He reached out his hand and stroked her cheek. Oh that I were a glove that I might touch his hand.

"During the break mom was too frozen with shock to really tell us what she thought of Joe, but her face told the story. Her eyes twinkled and her cheeks wore a rosey hue. (snip) Toward the end of the break Susan and I noticed the crew placing the wicker trunk at the end of the runway. We knew what THAT meant. (snip)

"Clad in black leather, chains and studs, enshrouded by a black felt cape with glitter designs, a creature of darkness flew through the audience and lept onto the stage. The Savage with the white and gold face and white fur mohawk moved with precision as if possesed and held the audience in awe. Mom's mouth fell open as women and men alike stiffened with apprehension.

"After a couple songs it was TIME! Joe descended to the end of the runway moving as would a snake if it had legs. Slowly and meticulously he opened the trunk and removed a gigantic boa. Wrapping the snake around his shoulders, he slithered about hissing and spitting. (snip)

"In the final set Joe partied up a storm and so did everyone else. People were up and dancing in the aisles and up on table tops, not exactly unusual for a Joe shoe though. I doubted there was a soul present who wasn't having the time of their life. (snip)

"Joe asked, as he often did, if we were having fun yet, and proclaimed 'You ain't seen nothing yet.' (snip) It took a while to set up but then at about 20 of 3 A.M., everyone bubbly and cheering, Joe invited the audience to partake of his free for all give away of California wine coolers. People moved forward by the dozens, Joe personally handing each a bottle of the cooler. (snip) Joe gave out 300 bottles of cooler that evening.

"When he'd stated earlier about not seeing 'nothing YET' he meant it, for if the cooler give away wasn't enough, there yet remained one final touch. Roses! Not a dozen. Or two dozen. Or three. More like a few bushels!

"Joe flung roses to ladies left and right. Some got one. Some got two. Mom got three. If earlier there had been any unpenetrable, stiffled, miss priss ladies, by the end of the evening every woman was infatuated with Joe. Naturally so. He was that kind of guy.

"The show over and having departed Cheers, en route to Krystals for a middle of the night snack, mom, Susan and I couldn't help but rattle on about Joe and the spectacular evening. In fact, the minute we left Cheers, the first words out of mom's mouth were 'That is the sexiest man! The way he undulates every part of his body..... ugh. Mmmmm. He's incredible!"

"Yes indeed. Past, present and future, incredible will always ....... ALWAYS be ............ a synonym for Joe Savage."

I had the pleasure of playing drums for Joe in the 70's! As great a showman as Joe was on stage, he was a source of constant amusement off the stage! My list of "Joe Stories" are amazing. Here are some of my favorites.

Joe, in Chicago, dressed only in a loin cloth and draped with a 10 foot Indian Rock Python, chased club patrons at Mother's, up the stairs and out onto busy Rush Street! Joe wound up on the hood of a taxi driven by a very startled Chicago taxi driver!

Another great one was the time Joe stopped in Chattanooga to feed the snakes and wound up in jail. They put Joe and the three snakes in a cell together! The Chief of Police and various police officers came into the cell and posed for pictures
with Joe and the snakes! Pictures of Joe and the snakes in the cell were featured on the national newscast of The Huntley-Brinkley Show!

One time in Michigan, Joe saw an advertisement for an exhibition of "The World's Largest Snake". Joe, of course, insisted that we go take a look! The guy taking the admission charges was bored, reading a book, and not paying attention! Joe opened the back of his station wagon and got all three of the snakes out and he was wearing them as a living "feather boa". He was carrying close to 175 pounds of snakes on his shoulders. He walked up to the man, who did not look up but reached for the money that Joe held in his hand! He glanced up and saw the three snakes heads and mouths inches from his fingers and turned completely white! It was great! Joe put his snakes up and we went into the trailer to see the snake and it was 30 feet long and about 3 feet thick! Joe, politely refused the offer by the man to enter the enclosure with the snake!

Joe was a great self promoter and not above staging a publicity stunt! At a gig at the Beer Garden in Evansville, Indiana, Joe was "choked" by one of the snakes! Oddly, Joe had arranged for two local TV stations to have camera crews at the club that night. I was the band leader and I was the only one "in on" the stunt. Joe was carried to the dressing room and laid out on a cot with the cameras rolling! At that time, and maybe still, Joe did not drink at all! In rushes our sound man who had drunk way too much that night and he started giving Joe mouth to mouth resusitation! Poor Joe!

Joe, I'm still playing drums and I own a Drum Shop in Atlanta!

I'm glad you are still doing it, you old war horse! I would love to come to a gig!

Hey Gang,
I was waiting for a signed contract before I said anything, and now I guess I'm on the road again. For the entire month of November, I will be appearing at Bally's in Tunica MS every Fri & Sat night. My group is superb and from all indications I will have a lot of support from the Casino Management to produce a show that is unique and distinctive. It seems the caliber of show groups throughout the country is scarce and shallow and a need exists for excitement, variety, spontaneity and just plain good ol showmanship. I would love to see you all present. It would truly be a grand reunion. God Bless.

Back in the thrilling days of yesteryear during the mid to late '70's and early 80's I played bass and sang in a "Show Band" called OPUS. We were handled by Bobby Tate and did most of the venues Joe did. Cajuns Wharf Nashville (where somebody fired a pistol in the parking lot and it came through the window behind the bandstand and missed my shoulder by about 6 inches.... geesh), Little Rock, Springfield IL, Columbia SC etc. OPUS was into the costumed Superband thing and did a "Fifties" Show with the audience interaction thing. The music and singing used to get stale but we were working in bars six nights a week and getting paid! Joe Savage was known as the "King of Commando Rock"!and we would seek him out whenever we had the chance. He had the Boa Constrictor act going on then I never saw him with cats. His band rocked. I had heard of his chainsaw antics and we used to sit and chat between "sets". Joes philosophy was "screw 'em if they can't take a joke I'll pay for the table it's chump change compared to what the drunks are paying to see me"! Loved it. This is the first time I had heard of the loss of one of Joe children. What a horrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to him. I have been away in "semi-retirement" from performing music for over 20 years now. Now that I'm a grandfather with a little push I might just "come off the porch" and do a little playin' the bass again! The OPUS Band had a reunion last year and there was talk of doing a couple of shows up in Akron OH at the Tangier Supper Club one of the joints we used to return to periodically. Our big shows were at a Marriott Hotel in Pittsburgh I think they closed the club and it's a Hyatt Regency or something.
If Joe Savage is still gettin' it I wish him the best of luck with his endeavors.

How crazy it is to find this site. I heard a song tonight that took me back to the late 70's at the Foxfire lounge in Ocala, fl. I was a cocktail waitress/ bartender when you played there. Monday night was animal night. What a time. Would love to know how you and the rest of the band from that era are doing.
Peace,

Thanks for all the wonderful support and encouragement over this last year. Our group has gained in strength and in intensity. Tunica was great in that we had two months to rehearse, learn new material and tighten up a lot; also we were joined by the very lovely and talented Crystal Lee. She is without a doubt a Star in the making. Over the next few months we are headed for Tangiers in Akron, OH; The Cajun Wharf in Little Rock, Ak; Nashville, TN and other interesting locations. I will keep you all posted on our whereabouts. Once again thanks and many Blessings to you.

Hey everyone! Just found this site! I remember Joe and the band from Red's in Akron, in the 1980's. I worked as a waitress during that time, and we had one heck of a time getting through the crowds that you guys brought in! Joe, you seemed to really enjoy undoing my strapless bra when I had a tray FULL of drinks to carry out to the crowd! Hope you're doing well, and happy that I hear you're still doing what you do best! If Dave, Jay, Binky (Claire), and Lee, are out there, let me know how you're doing!! I'm not sure if any of you remember me, (Binky, you should), but anyway, you probably remember Jim Mansfield, and Jay, he's especially curious as to what has happened to you. We'd love to hear from any of you. Take care, all of you!!

Joe Savage, Joe Savage...man, the memories that name conjures for me. I was young, I was impressionable and I hung out at the Treasure Island Nightclub on a regular basis. I didn't drink in those days. Boy, have times changed. Joe was certainly all the rage, and the island has never forgotten him.

I got up to sing with him one night on stage. Years later, I started my own bands. The rip in the projector screen was always a reminder of his time there.

Glad to hear he's still going strong.

Reading Vicki's comments re-enforces and confirms that time is no factor when you are dealing with feelings and experiences. This last week at Tangier's in Akron,OH was awesome. The people were still as energetic and loving thirty years after the fact. They brought pictures, buttons, kisses and lots of hugs. Please use this medium if you wish to know where we are or else go to MySpace.com/JoeSavageShow and I will keep you updated. Just know that I love and respect you all. P.S. Crystal Lee was truly a STAR.

Hey Joe... I just found out that You'll be playing at Cajun's Wharf in Little Rock later this month. What a treat. The last time I saw you and your band was at Jackie Lee's in Akron in 1987 and many times before that at Red's. Who'd a thunk that after movin' here many moons ago that my wife and I would get to rock to your sound one more time. It's great to hear that your're doing so well.

I trying to find an email address or any information on Lee Marquette. She was a very good friend when I lived in Nashville bit I lost track of her. Lee, if you read this I would love to hear from you.

This is the first time I have visited this site and just read the message from Tarzan. He was great that night. I was one of her friends who surprised her with this gift.

Joe, I have more memories of you and your shows at various clubs in Nashville and beyond than I can count. I hope you are doing well and still entertaining the masses.

Wow, what an amazing site. I found myself transported in time back to Bally's in Reno apx. '87. Boy was I young but eager to learn. : ) Joe, this goes out to you! I was a singer in a band called Coast to Coast back then and have been singing ever since. To this day, I will never forget how your performances forever became the benchmark for me to live up to. The way you transformed the audience and CHANGED them. That's what I wanted an audience to feel when I performed. I was moved when you performed (corny, I know). I have never seen anyone since who could whip the crowd into a frenzy like you. As a performer I will always be grateful for the shift in my perception that you were responsible for. And then I met Kim. What a great couple perhaps great tag team is more accurate. : ) More transformations occured...Glad to hear you are well after all these years. I too am doing well. Singing House music, teaching music to little ones and taking care of my family. Happy life to you and any chance of performances out Chicago way???

This goes out to all my friends, but especially Kirsten Kite. Yesterday I was invited to the Bon Jovi concert as a guest with backstage privileges and all. Sitting there among his 18,000 screaming fans gave me a feeling of exhilaration I can't describe. I go back a long way with John and Tito, the drummer for Bon Jovi. Seeing and Meeting them again reenergized my enthusiasm for this business and also the feeling that I have been acknowledged and accepted among my peers. When I receive comments from wonderful fans such as Kirsten, I once again am proud and grateful that God gave me certain talents that I continue to utilize and enhance. I pray with your help I will be able to hit new heights. Thank you and God Bless.

I saw Joe Savage a couple of times in Modesto, CA, circa 1983. He did a heck of a good show, actually.

One thing he often did onstage were anti-Soviet speeches. As Joe put it, 'The Russians want our women & our rock & roll.' Rush Limbaugh would have been proud.

How I landed on this site:)

I was flirting with a girl on a dating site. She said she was born in Alabama. Hahah the only thing I really remember from my short stay in AL was Joe Savage:)

But first...
I first saw Joe at "Shula's" in Niles Michigan back in ohhhh 71...
His show was Aces!!!! The Best!!!

I had just started my career as in radio as a DJ and my first gig away from my home was in Huntsville.

When I read that Joe was going to be in town, count me in!!!

I can't remember the name of the niteclub but it was up on a hill....

On the night that I was going to see Joe, it stormed and stormed. The weather was so nasty this club that could hold 500 was filled with TWENTY people.....

And this is why Joe is the BEST!!!
Now Joe didn't break out the snake and do his full blown show:)
But he and the band came out for the 20 of us and did an hour show!!!!
That was 30-some years ago and I'm still appreciate the effort Joe went to that night for 20 people!!!!

Fast forward a couple of years..
I'm now working in Columbus GA and Joe is coming to town!!! Haahaha count me in again:)

I remember that night too..
I was on a date with a girl who was pregnant (not mine). I remember Joe coming over to our table and mentioning the fact that my friend was pregnant (of course he assumed I was the father:).
And he made some fun comments about us being in the crowd!!!

Sharing, I've never been a parent but for those few minutes, I got the feeling of being an expecting father. Something I've always remembered because of Joe!!!!

Thanks for the memories Joe!!!!!!

Mark videotaped Joe’s concert when he played at Tangier’s in 2005. We are both in the video business and have a website, Montrosevideo.com. On our corporate page, there is a one minute excerpt from the concert as demo of our work. It’s the last video clip at the bottom of the page. And for anyone from Akron, there is also a short excerpt on our site from a documentary we did on Red’s bar. The link is: http://montrosevideo.com/Reds_History_Video.html

Just happened to be thinking about Joe the other day, and found this site. I produced a half-hour local TV show on Joe and the band during the week he played at Remington's Emporium in Spartanburg, SC in the early 80's. At the time the band was billed as "Joe Savage and Television". We shot their stage show over a couple of nights, and took the band out in full costume and makeup one day and shot B-roll of them acting crazy out in public. The show aired on Halloween night in, I believe, either 1980 or 1981. It was great fun, and the thing that impressed me most was Joe's commitment to *entertaining* rather than just being a rock singer. Joe, if you read this, it's good to hear you're still kickin' it out.

When I read the many comments from friends like John from Spartanburg, it gives me hope and delight that all the hard times we spent on the road were not in vain; that we were innovators and provided something for our audiences that was fruitful and important. The videos we did were light years ahead of our time and long before MTV. I'm glad people still remember and in that process are Entertained all over again.
Many Blessings,
Joe Savage

Saw Joe and the band at Cajun's Wharf in Little Rock circa 1983. What a great place for rafter climbing, which he did! And there was some great wood for his chain saw! One of our crowd was a C-130 Loadmaster and somehow Joe found this out. He proclaimed the loadmaster is going to sit in FRONT tonight and tables were cobbled together for us while the band played the Star Spangled Banner or something. Fireworks shooting out of the microphone he turned upsidedown. I remember describing Joe and the band as playing everything from Sinatra to Hendrix. A most memorable time.

Posted by: Bill at June 20, 2008 8:51 PM

Joe Savage. I was on the air in Lake Tahoe (Doug Storm) and had an interview show. I got to know Joe while he was chainsawing cocktail tables and blowing off shotgun shells and most memorable props of all those HUGE Aircraft Landing Lights that when they came on you could se the skeletons of the Audience projected on the back wall...in all my many careers around show biz and seeing THEM ALL...Joe Savage remains the BEST of the BEST when it came to rockin' a stage and sending an audience home talkin' to themselves.

I remember the Casino big wigs were shocked! Some of the casino crowds didn't get it but those of us
who did 'get it' GOT IT big time. haha.

And there were the bad times. I still rank it as the saddest moment when Joe related the leopard story to me in the dressing room one night. Still makes me shudder.

But Joe so GLAD you are still kickin' their proverbial asses!

You most likely don't remember me but I have you burned in my brain as Rocker #1! (maybe it was those damn landing lights...)

Being from New Orleans, I've seen alot of great performers over the years. I'm old and fat with some health problems and living in Tampa now, but I'll never forget seeing Joe Savage.
When I was a 'playa' back in the mid 70s, I saw Joe a half a dozen times at Sancho Panza's in Fat City. It was Roy Anselmo's place and he later died while in Europe.
Joe had the skull and the blood and the snake and would end his show by tearing up the ceiling with the mic stand. If I remember correctly, the owner Roy got pissed at Joe and didn't want him back there again, but Joe's fans clamored for Roy to bring him back. Roy finally gave in and had Joe Savage back, with the promise that he wouldn't destroy the joint at the end of the show. Joe promised and when the second show ended, Joe tore up the place. LOL, the crowd went wild and that was the end of Joe. I just googled Joe Savage and got to watch him perform again on youtube and then found this blog. thanks for the great memories, Joe.
Doug, a fan (I hope to see you in Tampa someday)

I used to go see the JSE at the Fore and Aft, the Gemini and the place Poughkeepsie too. Actually, I dated David for a bit when they were all living in the big house down near Yonkers or maybe Bronxville? The roadies lived in the attic, the members of the band on the next floor down and then, Joe, of course, had the King's digs. I used to visit pretty often to see him.

I remember on my first visit there, David introduced me to Joes Rottie puppy but she was soooo cute. He says to me, you think she's cute? come take a look at this. Brings me to Joe's bathroom and opens the door and before I can see anything, I hear this amazing kitten growl, he opens the door wider and there was a baby leopard Joe had just gotten from somewhere in Ohio if my memory serves me well. The most darling thing I've ever seen in my life. How many people get to cuddle with a baby leopard. She was just as precious as could be. As the mother of 2 girls myself, I hope and pray this was not the cat that took his baby's life.

Joe, you always rocked the house...you and Lee were the tits. And David was...special. I loved hanging down there with you guys. I'm in Hawaii now and if you ever tour again, I hope you don't forget us out here in the Pacific! Hawaii has never seen a show the likes of yours and wouldn't that just be too cool.

PS = I just put in a friend request to you on your myspace. Wonder if you will remember me visiting David.

Hello Joe and all your fans here!

In the early 70's there was a really great small nightclub in Raleigh, North Carolina called "THE OTHER EYE". The manager there brought in a lot of great bands and entertainers for Tuesday to Saturday night gigs.

I and my friends never missed seeing the shows. I have to say to Joe Savage that the 2 most memorable were Kenny Rogers and the Fifth Edition and The Joe Savage Experience.

But by far the best entertainer and showman I ever saw anywhere and anytime was Joe Savage! The Other Eye would bring Joe in about every 2 to 3 months for a week. Once people saw Joe perform and got over their first night around that big boa constrictor in the foot locker, they wanted to see Joe any time he came back to Raleigh.

Joe Savage did not get a bunch of media promotion. He did not need hype to bring the people in, just word of mouth about his act and his great musical talent too was all he needed.

Joe, as several people said on this blog, I too had wondered if you were still alive and performing. Tonight I remembered to Google "Joe Savage musician snake" and am so glad to have found this website and read the blogs.

Joe, you are the ultimate talented musician and entertainer and obviously you are your own producer. For you have been the creator of your most unique blend of music, fun and uplifting cheer as you entertained your fans and all who I am sure still hold the same high respect and appreciation for your abilities.

Play on and we hope to see you entertain again!

Jerry Hayes - Eagle, Idaho and Raleigh, N.C.

I keep hearing Garrison Keillor on "A Prairie Home Companion" introducing a musician named Joe Savage. Every time I hear the name I yell out the name and then tell my girlfriend stories about the Joe Savage I saw years ago.

Kodiak Alaska can be a pretty wild place and the old Beachcomber bar stood out even among wild Alaskan bars. They used to import real talent from outside Alaska for the bar band. Around 1990-91 word got around town about somebody you just had to go see to believe.

With all that buzz I went on Sunday night to see what it was all about. There were about 8-10 people in the entire bar, bored and waiting for this "Joe Savage." The show started with a backup singer named Vickie Carrico. All of a sudden the curtain went up and here was a full-blown rock and roll show straight out of a mega-coliseum, and this was just the backup band! Saying we were surprised doesn't begin to cover the situation.

Then Joe Savage came on...

Joe and his band were on the island for quite a while. I think they were there for a full winter and the following summer. A bald man in makeup and a very puffy fur coat tends to stand out in a town of wild and grubby commercial fishermen, but Kodiak is already full of kooks and misfits, so Joe almost seemed like a local in fairly short order. He had his share of Alaskan problems, like trying to find live food for the snakes in the dead of winter.

As for the snakes, you can't find a more exotic animal for Alaska. They lived in a giant wood crate at the bar and anyone who asked generally got to look in the box. These were fearsome and terrifying beasts indeed. One night I realized that the snakes couldn't hurt anybody no matter how hard they tried. Everybody was heavily dressed and like most Alaskan public buildings, the bar was actually rather cold. The indoor temperature might have been in the 50s, which was near the edge of death for those poor lethargic snakes.

Joe really was like a local fairly soon. He would be on the radio with the DJ, or hanging out at the cafe (never too early in the day). He wrote a song about Kodiak that he sang endlessly. Then he left town and I never heard of him again. I heard that name on "Prairie Home Companion" again today and finally sat down to Google him. This was the first site I hit. I can't believe that the same Joe Savage is on public radio with Garrison Keillor, but on the other hand, well, you never knew what was going to come out of him next...

Met Joe in 1978 at a band showcase by the BWI airport in Maryland.3 stages inside had performances going on while club owners/reps were checking them out when suddenly explosions seemed to be going on outside.Hundreds of people ran outside to see what was going on and there were fireworks going off in the parking lot compliments of Joe,and he was climbing up the side of the building like Spiderman.I was 23 years old,I am now 54 and have never forgotten this amazing man.

Hey Joe,
Who was your keyboard player in the band that played the mid-80s in Nashville at Cajun's Warf? He was always so sweet to me, very much the gentleman. I dated your sax player, Ed, and later worked as a cocktail waitress there. Lee was also very cool, I always loved her preformances. What a great time we all had back then. Hope you are doing well.

I remember Joe very fondly and very well!During the mid to late 1960's we were both in the USAF and worked in several clubs in Myrtle Beach, SC with our band "The Continentals". He was a true showman and we learned a lot from each other. Those were the days, especially our tour to the children's homes in North Carolina. The high point of the tour was when Joe got his new Shure microphone in Charlotte. We were even on local TV after that. Glad to read the comments from his fans! I send my best to Joe. Rose would be proud.

I used to go see Joe everytime he played Savannah. His theme song was Billy Joel's "You May Be Right". The line "I may be crazy, but it just may be a lunatic you're looking for" fit him to a tee.Wildest show I ever saw. He would jump over the bar and pass out liquor bottles, cut up tables with a saw, grab drinks and napkins off waitress's tray and give them away. The napkins looked like snow falling. The only person who didn't care for his show was the bar clean up man.A completely wild and mad cat. Great shows. We still talk about him on ocassion.

Don't know what made me think about Joe today; but I did....and a quick Google of his name lead me here.
I was in the Army, stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY, when I saw Joe perform at a club in Clarksville (I believe it was "Texas East"). It was sometime between 1987 and 1991....can't remember exactly...seems he may have poured too much Jack Daniels down my throat!! What ever the case, his performance obviously left a lasting impression on me. Rock on, Joe!!

Posted by: Ricky at October 18, 2009 3:06 PM

Joe play at The Cat's Eye in Raleigh.. late 60's or early 70's.Sometimes his daughter would be with him.My friend Kaye, who "dated" him would keep her while he played.I met the daugher in the early 90's backstage at a Bon Jovi Concert.Had always wondered about her. She was precious.

Posted by: Sus at October 23, 2009 4:05 PM

Not sure if Joe played at Texas East but I saw him several times in Clarksville at The Camelot. Saw him perform several other times in Nashville at the Brass A and another club I can't remember the name of. His show's were the BOMB! Explosive charges on his mic stand, chain sawing tables up, walking thru the crowd singing while pouring Jack Daniel down whoever's throat and the ever lovely Lee Marquette. She was a sexy replica of Nancy Wilson (the blonde in Heart) in those black fishnet's and heels!!! What fun we had at their shows. Those were some great times back then.

Posted by: Marty Travis at October 30, 2009 5:21 PM

don't know what prompted to look up joe savage, but i saw him play in augusta, ga at the ny, ny nightclub around 1979 or 80, about 500 people there. the band was top notch and he put on a hell of a show. whole band was very professional. dont remember any snakes or tables cut with chainsaws, but he rocked!

Posted by: Larry at November 2, 2009 9:44 PM

Bob, yes I AM the same Lee Marquette that played in the band Impact in the D.C. area.

Posted by: Lee at November 8, 2009 11:25 PM

Wow - Hi Lee! I met you at the Hilton, I think? not sure which hotel, it was many moons ago... Fell in love with you, as did all the other guys there. We went to a nearby restaurant after your show... Good times, hope all is will with you! Hope you're still performing!

Colours.......The Fireplace, Lexington; Ramon's, Akron; The Buttercup, Lunenburg; The Office, St. Pete; couple of places in Atlanta; One in Columbus, Ga.; etc.....'72.......

and the place in New Bedford, MA where rather than kow-tow to the fat club owner who became incensed when, because Elgin Wells had not made it back from Atlanta, you decided to refrain from performing the "Snake Show"...... you walked, giving me 4 days off in Massachusetts which I thoroughly enjoyed....
Was talking to Bobby the other day and I remarked that if you knew how much pure enjoyment and laughter you had made possible for us over the years since then that you would probably send us a bill for services rendered.......

Thanks, Joe.

P.S. Don't send that bill because...uh, I moved....yeah, that's the ticket.....I moved.....

Just wondering something..I have been married to a drummer for almost 23 years. He was playing in Little Rock at Cajun's Wharf and The Wine Cellar in the mid 80's...He played with a band called Ground Zero and also played drums for a Lee Marquette...would you happen to be the same Lee? Been looking for you, Bill talks fondly of those days..and really brags on Lee...she could sing any Pat Benetarr or Joan Jett song...and had a range of that kind of music. Trying to find you to surprise him.Last he heard you (if this is you) were in Nashville and were married to a Music producer or something like that...Please contact me...I will be checking this pretty regular...would love to surprise him...he will be 50 in a few years and would love to surprise him with some of the musicians and fellow police officers he has worked with..We are located in NE Arkansas still...

I had the honor and pleasure of being able to open for Joe in Spartanburg SC back in the eighties. My name is Dino Fair and at that time I was co-founder of a Carolina show and recording band called "The Fantastic Shakers". I cannot remember the name of the club, but I do remember "Joe Savage". That night I witnessed an incredible band, production and an entertainer that took the word entertainment up on a scale from one to ten, to a definite ONE MILLION!!! A very small crowd watched as Joe pulled no punches. It was quite evident that Spartanburg had no clue of what was coming to that medium sized college town and it was equally evident that Joe did not care. He performed as if he and his band were in front of the hugest Rock-in Roll audience in recorded history. His wide variety of music added with his electrifying stage presence litteraly sent his rock message to myself and at the same time enspired the rest of my life and career. I write this blog as a result of a conversation my present band had on the way back from Savannah Gergia this past weekend. My best friends in the entire world, my coharts in crime "The Sea-Cruz Band" were all in attendance and as we talked. Three of us including myself had fond memories of Joe and Opus. First, Jimmy Lathen, our road manager and spiritual adviser chimed in with his memories of Joe when Joe performed at "The Magic Attic" in Myrtle Beach SC while Jimmy was the manager there. Then our front man/sax player/and incredible entertainer had us in stiches with his memories. Buth Barnes opened for Joe while he was with a band called "The Band of OZ" at a club in Savannah. Butch actully met Joe and took the grafitti shooting microphone segment and injected it into his personal arsenal with the "Band of OZ". Butch told us of having to replace alot of ceiling tiles while using this stunt all over the southeast. After a long night on the band bus we all came to the conclusion that if Joe was still performing and that if he was ever in reach, that we would take the night off and treat ourselves to a true Rock-and-Roll experience. We pulled Joe up on a Blackberry and via U-Tube, listened and watched Joe performing in Nashville at a club in 2009. We were all amazed at the fact that he was still puttin' in your face!!! You go with your bad self Joe, You are remebered and loved and will be till The Rock doors close. That means NEVER!!!

LEE MARQUETTE: are you the Lee from Dist.Hgts, MD?
do you remember me? Frank Tippett?

Posted by: frank tippett at May 31, 2010 7:04 AM

I played drums in the house band (NOYB) at Shula's Night Club in Niles, Michigan. Joe came through a number of times in 1971. I'm still playing today, but rememberances of Joe the Snakeman and his band are still vivid today.

Posted by: Bob Godfrey at June 8, 2010 9:31 PM

Joe is without a doubt, one of the best performers ever. I think I saw almost every show he and the awesome band of the 80's played in Nashville. They are not only all great performers and musicians, they are also great people. I have very fond memories of those days and am thrilled that I have recently been able to reconnect with a few of the band members. I hope to see Joe on stage in Nashville again soon. Joe, Lee, Jay, Binky, Pudley and Dave, I'll never forget those days and I love you all.

Joe Savage! And I *think* Lee, also....you had dinner at our home in Stevens Point WI YEARS ago when you consistently played the Party Hardy Holiday Inn. I'm happy in NY now - remarried - and was talking to a WI friend last week about you. You have to love Google. Glad to know you are doing well and still rockin'. That boa always scared the boo boo jeebies out of me.

I hooked up with Joe and the band in Chicago in 77
until late 78, They were looking for someone to do lights, I also did Special effects, Joe and I clicked he would get my creative mind and mechanicals going, and we turned into a team Joe would say work your magic and make me more effects, I did LOL. I pushed myself further then I thought possible. Then in 88 he called and asked me rejoin the band in Grand Cayman I went. we came up with alot more effects (props) ever imagined, even surprised Joe. That man has my utmost respect, he pushed me and I and I delivered and created.Joe you are my friend.Thank You

Hey Joe! I met you in Savannah, Ga in about 1980, at Remingtons. You were playing "just another funky nightclub" and pouring "pepermint schnapps" down my throat. You would also take the whole club outside in a line singing and dancing down Abercorn Street. Well, maybe that only happened once. Great times! You also enjoyed the Savannah Beach with me one saturday. Is Jay, the drummer, still around?

Posted by: Kay from Savannah, GA at January 6, 2011 12:40 AM

I first saw Joe in Nashua, New Hampshire playing a club called Brothers 4. Later that year I saw him in New Orleans (Metairie) playing a club in Fat City. I took my brother there to see him. Great memories and times.

Posted by: linda at March 16, 2011 6:36 PM

I have often thought of Joe Savage and wondered if he is still performing. He was in the Cayman Islands performing for awhile and I went to see him every nite! What an awesome entertainer!! I would love to see him again!!

I'm saddened to hear of his daughter's unfortunate death! How very sad. It must be a horrible burden for him to bear. What a horrific accident.

Glad to know he is still around.

It's 1978. I'm 16. Sneak into the "Gemini" in Yorktown, NY. First time in a bar. Standing with my back to the wall and my jaw dropped. This bald headed, vein popping guy on stage rocking the entire place. Jumps off stage, onto the bar, grabs a bottle of Jack and starts pouring into anyone with their head up and mouth open.
Probable saw him a total of 10 times after that. Springsteens Born to Run was the big production. What a piss!!
