RORER 714

You little kiddies don't know what that is, do you? Let me tell you. Quaaludes, mon. Stumble Biscuits. Disco Biscuits. Karen Quinlan Cocktails. Methaqualone. The absolute antithesis of anything you would want to mix with alcohol. Which is why everyone did it. I had a Rorer 714 T-shirt. Didn't you?

Listen, kids. The next time somebody tells you how cool boomers are, you tell them Velociman said they're full of shit. And by the way, we did Ecstasy. It was called MDA then. Now it's called MDMA. Designer drugs. Always one isotope away from illegality. Bah.

You wanna talk 'ludes, Kim? Bring it on!

Posted by: Da Goddess at July 29, 2003 6:13 AM

Ah (big smile on my face) I REMEMBER 'ludes!

How about little Black Beauties...could get 'em for 50cents a pop...drive a long way to the beach with them and then go all weekend without sleep.

Then you'd need a 'lude(or 2) :-D

When I lived in south Texas (Houston) we used to get these things called Mandrax. I was told they were Mexican quaaludes -- you always have to question the accuracy of street info re DRUGS. They weren't nearly the headclubbers that were 714's, but a couple of them provided a really good simulation of a drunk.

Posted by: Wayne at July 29, 2003 12:15 PM

I once ate one of those camping out for Bob Dylan tickets at the Turtles at Northeast Plaza in Atlanta with friends. That's what we did in those pre-internet days if your memory goes back that far. Scored front row tickets, got in my car, drove to Athens, dropped off my friends, parked my car, went to class. I awoke in the middle of a lecture, not remembering ANY part of the drive from Atlanta to Athens, parking, etc. Steered clear of them after that...

Incidentally, Bob appeared to have taken one or two before going on stage when I went to the show, so it was all kinda simpatico.

Posted by: rankin rob at July 29, 2003 1:57 PM

I did a 714 one time, in college. Took it and went to a "Drink 'n' Drown" at a local pub.
Drowned.
Some UGA football players picked a fight with me and the next thing I know the police are hauling ME away to jail.
Ah, the good ole days.

Posted by: Jack Straw at July 29, 2003 2:05 PM

By the way, Rorer got so much static they quit making the things and Lemmon took over circa 1980. The "Mandrax" referenced by Wayne from Texas were bootleg; could have had anything in 'em. When I was in Texas in 1982-1983 the local kids were smoking the goddamned things, and occasionally dying, because, you see, a depressant inhaled into your lungs makes them go to sleep.

Posted by: Jack Straw at July 29, 2003 2:07 PM

I remember smoking real 'ludes once or twice. That was back in Kansas. Kind of made your head numb. I didn't really like it.

Posted by: Wayne at July 30, 2003 7:19 PM

You're not suposed to LIKE drugs, Wayne. You're supposed to ENDURE them.

Posted by: Kim at July 30, 2003 8:55 PM

Ah, it's nice to see that someone besides me remembers MDA! Memories... :)

I ate many a lude in my days,(in Beavercreek Ohio, remember indian ripple park ) started around 1977 until 1980, after that they were all fake ludes and they sucked, i think they were full of valium. I wish there was something out there that would be a great buzz like the ole Rorer 714, they were fucking awesome. Long live the great memories of the Rorer714, on second thought, i really don't remember much of my lude buzz's,but i think they were a great time.
P.S. I ALSO HAD A RORER714 T-SHIRT.

Posted by: chuck fleming at August 6, 2003 10:35 PM

what are the odds of coming across one? a friend gave me a pill, saying it was a "lude". i logged on to find out what rorer 714 meant. found velociworld, Lo and Behold!

Posted by: chris at September 16, 2003 1:48 AM

Let's not forget the "orange AS" and the "two tone blue" Mandrax are a methaqualone/antihistimine combo. Not always bootleg, but the likleyhood always present.

Posted by: mike at October 3, 2003 3:29 PM

Loved them Ludes. 1978 a bar in New York called INFINITY'S. Bought 5 for $20. Ate 2 gave one to a girl at the bar and got a hand job under the bar. Oh the power of Rorer.

Time -In Quaaludes and red wine. Demanding Billy Dolls and other friends of wine - Bowie

Did a few in NYC at Max's and CBGBs. And of course mixed them heavily with beer - not into red wine in my younger days.

Posted by: Ziggy at January 20, 2005 11:08 AM

The quote from Time is wrong "other friends of mine" is correct. I loved ludes, but I think I liked barbiturates better (seconal, nembutal and especially Tuinal). In the States, there were four brands of methaqualone, none mixed with an antihistamine (that was Mandrax, a UK drug). Arnor-Stone and Rorer both made methaqualone base and marketed it under the names Sopor and Quaalude, respectively. Methaqualone Hydrochloride was marketed as Parest (400 and 200, equal to 300 and 150 Quaalude/Sopor) and Somnafac Forte. Parke-Davis made one of those (I think Parest) and I forget who made the other. Methaqualone is still legally manufactured and prescribed in many countries. For medical reasons, it was better than barbiturates as far as a sleeping pill...much shorter half life and no barbiturate hangover. But those fucking benzodiazepines have taken over the whole market. What a shame.

Posted by: BowieFan at January 24, 2005 9:32 PM

aww man, i remember buying ludes in 1980-1981 . they were 3 for 10.00. i would take 2, drink at least 2 32 oz budweisers just to kick in the ludes. and then go to manhatten. there were so many places to go, espesially in those days.
i was a stubbling motherfucker on those. felt all tingly troughout my body. and slurred all the way till next day. by the way the third lude i had i would give to a girl and get layed instantly.
i also remember the next day if i smoked a joint, i would feel luded all over again.
oh yeah, i would also wake up next day with food smeared all over my bed. not remembering i had ate that the nite before.
man, bring back the 714s and those days.

MAN!!!! The Rorer 714, Lemmon 714 (also 712). Ohhhh. If I was only a chemist! The absolute BEST head in the world. I had a prescription. That was replaced by Valium in '82or 3 then Xanax which I still take.

I have the recipe for the Goobers. Not the skill

Remember how good you felt the next morning after ludes? We called it the "Goobover".

Posted by: LudeLVR at March 26, 2005 6:30 PM

Benzodiazepine drugs are more addictive than quaaludes. If there are still quaaludes being made at this time, they are probably full of chemical impurites which can cause serious damage to the bladder. All sedatives have the same effect. If you can't get ludes, make up for it with valium, xanax or alcohol. - SAM

Posted by: sam at April 4, 2005 5:46 PM

If you've never woken up with a bloody nose and your platform shoes on backwards, you've never had 'ludes! I recall seeing them before they became "the thing" and they could be had 100 for $10, either Rorers or Sopors, which were essentially the same thing. From what I understand about Mandrax, they were British 'ludes. Remember the 10cc song, "I'm Mandy, Fly Me?" Quaaludes did for sex what Mickey D's did for the hamburger! Only trouble was, when you did get laid, you didn't recall much about it! In Re: MDA; ours came on a Maalox tablet cos it would upset your stomach if taken without. At least that's what our supplier told us!

Posted by: Babe Ruth (714) at April 12, 2005 9:14 PM

OMG 714, that magic number. First experience was probably 1973 all the way to the early 80's. The trick with wallbangers was the dosage (dependent on alcohol or no) that would get you sufficiently loaded, but not poisoned. When done right one can remember what they did the night before and still relish it with her in the morning. A libido rocket launcher, guaranteed sex. Got Mandrax from my cousin in Scotland, but I did NOT like. I think the antihistimine in them fogged me up really bad (some still do). ;-P

Posted by: lickitdesplit at May 24, 2005 8:12 AM

Ludes!!! There never has been and never will be a finer drug. I had a tee shirt as well I had the Speedo ( like the alka seltzer guy) rorer 714 better living through chemistry. First one was 1972 and I overpaid at 3 for a buck. In the mid seventies there were bootlegs in brown and yellw 500mg caps. These were a buck a peice and were the real deal. No BS just methaquallone. What I wouldnt do for a bottle of 714's ( rorer not lemmons) now. The numb fingertips, nose, lips, the sex, the stumles, the sex and oh yea the sex. It wa salso great fun to go into the city ( nyc) and go nuts in times square and then eat chineese in chinatown like a madman. I was too young for bars then. Ah the good ole days.

Posted by: dale at August 9, 2005 8:41 PM

You could obtain ludes here in Indonesia by prescription up until 2003. I'm not sure if they've been banned or what. Brand name was Revonal (methaqualone) manufactured by Merck (Germany..not the American Merck...different company). Dosage is 75mg...they've cut way back on the dosages these days if you can still find them. I think you can still get them in the Philippines. I've never tried ludes because I was just a kid in the 70s...however, I'd like to try it. Currently I'm on Val1um (diazepam) 10mg twice a day....Val1um is certainly no fun...doesn't get you high or anything. There IS Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) here by prescription..."roofies"...the Roche version of ludes. lol...but probably not as good I suppose.

A buddy of mine and I used to consume Lemmons 714s until they were discontinued, when they were discontinued we got turned on to the recipe for bootleg sopor powder, cooking was all it took, we would put our bootleg sop's against any 714 ever made by an pharmicutical company out there, pure white powder after rinsing, none of that tan or brown junk. 5 mins later numb finger tips and lips. Best panty droppers ever!!!!!! Pussy Pusy Pussy. Only cost 5 yrs in the joint. Lol Hail the almighty methaqualone. BTW, if an pound hit the street now adays, will the car wrecks and snithces rollin on ya, it would be a matter of days before ya get popped by the C.L.E.T Team!!!!!! Miss them days!!But, I have good news, I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance!!!!! Ludes and driving do not mix!!!!! Cool forum ya have here, just no good drugs made anymore (tuinal). I used to buy them in '72/'73 for $20 for a 100. The baby 714's were 712's (150 mg)...just the right buzz. To the guy that said he did 10 "ludes" a day in his prime... you had to be a bed ridden vegetable or have been getting the weakest (not fresh, there was a difference} ludes around. My experience with 'ludes started in "High School" 10th grade to be exact. The plus sides of the drug was no booze odor to get you busted by parents or cops but 1-2 ludes was equivelant to 10-12 beers +/-. But memory problems were something to deal with especially if mixed with enough alcohol (2-3 beers would boost the effects decently). And in ending they would make you run into parked cars on the side of the road. LMAO personal experience after a high school football game.

I did 6 Quaaludes on my 16th birthday.
(1973)
Lucky I didn't kick the bucket.
They cost 50 cents apiece, at that time.
I got extremely high...
and barfed out the back-seat window of a friend's
Buick Electra 225 while rolling westbound down
Chicago Ave. (in Chicago)...
and that's about all I can remember.
Quaalude-Sopors-Tuinals-Seconals-Aymitals---
these were my favorite high in those days.
(besides LSD, MDA & Mescaline!)
...I had TOO much fun to have survived!
(but, survuve I DID!)
Cocaine ruined everything.
Where's the good Window-Pane nowadays?)

The summer of 76.Cleveland Ohio.
We had the World Series of Rock at the old Clevelend Stadium,we had purple microdot, orange sunshine all the reefer we could consume and we had LUDES-Rorer 714's!!

Well, I ate 5 and half of em (1/2 at a time)until I was sufficently stoned to scare my freinds and it aint easy to scare a bunch of stoners.

Well to make a long story short, I was picked up by an ambulance and couple of police cars on a set of railroad tracks...walking barefoot with bloody shredded feet from the stones and shit that they use on the tracks. By the time I made it to the hospital I was about comatose...but just barely alive enough to be diggin the buzz.

My girlfreind managed to gain access to my bedside in the emergency room by telling them that she was my sister, the minute I saw her I stuffed my tongue down her throat and can still remember the gasps from the nurses.

The DR tried sticking a tube down my throat to pump my stomach and I was having NONE of that.So he gave me a dose of ipecac. Ipecac sucks balls.

Just about the time I was feeling like the Ip. wasn't gonna work (and I laughed at the Doc) I was treated to some of the best projectile vomiting I ever heard about or saw. It was a puke fest for the books. Heave after heave after heave, I guess the Doc got the last laugh on that one.

The coolest part of all? Well that was the 2 day lude buzz that I got to go home with. My Dad was so scared I was gonna croak he didn't even get pissed at me.

Yessir those were the good old days.

You guys have no idea how abused those delicious qualudes were in my world of brooklyn, new york. The doctors scripts, the bootlegs any and all, all the time all day. zombie yes but still able to get a college diploma!!!!
I road that train 11 years, sold them and ate them fresh from the pharmacy or right from the faxtory. Start with 2 and keep taking 1 every once in a while. i would say 15 is a real number just not all at once. And yes the sex, the sex it sure made the girls very willing but made me work but ah yes the sex. I think 3 abortions sound right cost about 300 bck then Oh dont forget the barbituates they were special especially the tuinals. Those were the days but nearly killed me but the fun the concerts the parties the girls and lets not forget the accidents!!!! Lucky one was killed but some of my friends got real messed up and disfigured Oh the price we paid to party!!!!

GOD! I think the last lude I dropped was in 74 (last of the mohicans). I was in jr high school on Long Island and me and my friends (at the time) saw some high schoolers playing football. We were wasted and figured what the hell, let's play with them. Well... I still can't remember anything after the first play! I got tossed a pass, got tackled and that was the end of that! Ludes were a lot of fun, but not meant to play football on, lol.

wannasoargal...
Quaaludes haven't been manufactured since the early 70's. They were actually RORER/714 and were discontinued because they became more of a recreational drug than what they were intended to be. They were replaced by LEMMEN(?) (mfg unknown), which were a more suppress version and didn't quite have the same effect.

Music sounded even better than ever. One of my friends threw up in this others girls purse!! I cant believe there was ever such a great drug/ geri

Posted by: geri at November 28, 2006 12:17 PM

In the 1970s, I did my share of Rx Rorer 714s (300 mg) and 712s (150 mg) and the Sopor and Parest equivalents, though the Quaalude brand was by far the most popular.

By the late 70s, ludes were widely known to be a recreational drug, and it was hard for anyone to get from a legit doc a script, even my grandmother--until then, my "supplier," though she didn't know that!

That's when bootlegs, usually easy to spot, really exploded onto the scene. I purchased a bag of a hundred in late '79 for me and my friends. They looked perfect, just like pharmo, but I knew they had to be bootlegs. I took 2 or 3, washed them down with Moosehead, then, as usual, had massive sex with my girlfriend all night.

Next day I had a sore dick and a sore on my chin. I figured it was just vigorous, protracted sex. Replay same thing the next weekend. Another sore dick and chin. Hmmm. 3rd weekend, more sex, beer, and ludes. More sore cock and face. Somethin's in them thar ludes!

Started asking around and finally found another couple of dudes who had the same symptoms as me. Looked and felt like a chafe, just deep enough to scab over. Figure other guys did, too, but were too embarassed to say. My girlfriend had no probs with them, and I didn't find any other chicks who did either, so I don't know whether females had any problems or some did and just wouldn't fess up.

Well, that was the last time I ever ate ludes, but I still have a visible memory, the scar on my dick! They sure looked good enough to be pharmaceutical, but I've never seen such a side effect from the real McCoys. Perhaps something builds up gradually in your system until you reach a threshold, and real ludes then cause an allergic skin reaction. That's the way poison ivy works.

Or if, as I suspect, they were bootleg, I'd really like to know what ingredient was in that batch of ludes that made us break out. It's just too ironic that this drug renowned for people getting naked under it's influence would cause a reaction that prevented you from having sex until you healed a week or more later.

Has anyone ever heard of this reaction? If so, was it from pharmo or bootleg ludes? Let me know your story.
